Integrative Therapy with Andy Maxwell (MBACP)

Psychotherapy and counselling provide a chance to explore yourself freely and without judgement. It can be a huge relief being able to talk about your true feelings, thoughts and behaviours - working through them with a skilled professional who is separate from your daily life.

The most important ingredient for successful therapy is a trusting relationship. Together we will build a mutually open and honest relationship, one where you can explore your fears, difficulties and anxieties in a safe, welcoming environment. My aim is to help you gain a better understanding of yourself, so you can get to the route of your problems and find meaning in them. I will help you develop more effective skills and strategies to better cope with your problems so you can choose what you would like to change in your life and how you might go about it.

Clients contact me with a wide variety of issues they’d like to explore.

  • Low self-esteem, self-confidence or self-worth.
  • Depression, anxiety, stress or intrusive, overwhelming emotions.
  • Dealing with life changes or stages.
  • Difficulties in relationships - with partners, friends, work colleagues or family issues.
  • Feelings of loneliness, emptiness or loss of meaning and direction.
  • Trauma from a recent, single incident or from a historical, long-lasting situation.
  • Bereavement or a general sense of loss.
  • Being ‘othered’, discriminated against or abused.
  • Addiction, self-harm or suicidal thoughts and actions.
  • ADHD, OCD, negative body image or eating issues.

This list is not exhaustive, and you may not be able to define the issues you are struggling with. However, you probably have a sense that your life could be better, and you’d like some help achieving that.

Training, qualifications & experience

I started my professional career over 30 years ago as an architect, working internationally. I helped people explore those parts of their external environment that were not working for them - in their home, workplace etc. - and helped then decide what they would like to change and how they might achieve that. Now, as a psychotherapist, I help people explore those parts of their internal environment - their feelings, thoughts and behaviours - that are not working for them, and help them decide what they would like to change and how they might achieve that.

I have worked in charities (such as The Listening Place – helping people who suffer with suicidal thoughts and self-harm) in eduaction (such as The Royal Academy of Music - supporting students and staff) and creative corporations. My experience in private practice comes from years of helping people who are struggling with problems in their personal and professional lives. I qualified as a therapist through a variety of complimentary training programmes.

  • Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy.
  • Foundation Certificate in Psychodynamic and Person-Centred Counselling.
  • Advanced Certificate in Person-Centred Counselling

Previous qualifications: BA (Hons) Architecture, Dip. Architecture,

There is a lot of jargon in all businesses and therapy is no different, so if you have any questions about my theoretical approach to therapy or anything else, please feel free to ask. My approach is Relational, exploring how you relate to yourself and others. I use a blend of traditional Psychodynamic and more modern Humanistic modalities. Each session lasts 50 minutes and the number of sessions you attend can depend on a lot of factors. Therapy can be long or short-term, face-to-face or online.

I am a registered member of The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP) and am bound by its Ethical Framework for best practice.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

How we would work together

I will offer you a space to feel heard, understood and accepted, in all aspects of yourself. I will help you become more aware of how your past experiences could be influencing the way you think, feel and behave in the present, so you can decide what you would like to change and how you would like to approach your future. As we talk, I will draw on a range of therapeutic approaches to help you find your way.

I will invite you to try to put into words your most sensitive, vulnerable thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. This can be difficult, but we will work together, so you can start to process, understand and find some meaning in your suffering. Then, as we explore, you will begin to experience changes in the way you relate to yourself and to others.

I am committed to being non-discriminatory and inclusive. I welcome diversity and clients of all identities, cultures, faiths, genders and sexualities, as well as those with different physical or mental health abilities. My approach recognises the often-difficult power dynamics in relationships shaped by the similarities and differences between people living in a multicultural society.

Where and when we would work together

It can take longer than you would like to feel the positive effects of therapy. So, I recommend an introductory phone call first, followed by an initial meeting in person to discuss your hopes for and concerns about therapy.

I prefer to work ‘in person’, as I believe it is the most effective form of talking therapy. However, there are benefits to working online occasionally, so we may also meet via Zoom.

Your first session

Free Introductory Call: I offer a free 15-minute phone or video call, where we can discuss in general what’s troubling you and how I might be able to support you.

Initial Session: If, after our introductory call, you are interested in therapy, we can meet for an initial session. This will give us the chance to get to know one another a bit better. We can talk in a bit more detail about what you would like from therapy, your concerns about it, the commitment you can give to it, possible session times, location etc. and anything else that would help you decide your next step. This ‘one-off’ session would be charged at my usual rate and is without further obligation on your part.
