Paola Filotico - Clinical Psychologist
Life is a challenge we cannot meet alone. We might be going through a hard patch at work or in our relationship, we might be haunted by trauma, by our past, or be uncertain about the future; we might be after a better understanding of ourselves, or seeking for some deeper meaning to existence. At school they did not teach us how to understand our emotions, and it is normal to feel overwhelmed at times. Luckily, it is never too late to learn. I am here to help you do just that, and be by your side throughout the journey.
I am a Clinical Psychologist with 13 years of experience, both in the public and the private sector, in two different countries, the UK and Italy. I am trained in various approaches that I integrate depending on your needs: I believe that one size fits all does not fit anyone, so the intervention will be tailored on you. We will explore your problems together, placing them in the context of your unique experience. Change is central in my interventions - we can work on how to adapt to it, how to steer it the right way when it happens, and how to make it happen yourself, in ways that you are comfortable with.
Among other problems, I can help if you are struggling with any of the following:
- Difficulty dealing with uncertainty
- Loss of pleasure in things
- Self-accusation and self-blame
- Getting caught up into unpleasant memories
- Impact of trauma
- Being in physical pain without an apparent medical reason
- Frequent feelings of shame and guilt
- Poor sleep
- Irritation without knowing why
- Feeling emotionally affected by political uncertainty
- Worrying about climate change
- Difficulty being with others
- Worrying a lot
- Fear of the future
- Not seeing the point in life
- Being exhausted without knowing why
- Having many unpleasant and disturbing thoughts that you can’t get rid of
- Feeling that you are losing control
- Being unhappy with your appearance
- Worrying a lot about your health
- Preoccupation around eating
- Anxiety related to coronavirus and Covid-19
I only engage with clients online and over the phone. I have have been using digital platforms to deliver therapy for years, and this modality allows for flexible hours, a more personal setting, a deep therapeutic relationship, and a steadier continuity of treatment: it makes it truly possible to tailor my intervention on you. I have clients from many different countries in the world, which gives me an actual understanding of cultural differences, and of the ways in which society has an impact on personal psychology. Of course I will be happy to discuss in an initial free call any doubts you might have.
What to expect when you get in touch
It can be difficult to decide whether someone is the right person to help us: please, be in touch for a 20 minutes free telephone informal discussion, or via email, to discuss your needs, and see how we can move forward. This is by no means a commitment to initiate therapy, just an opportunity to ask any questions that you may have.
If you decide to continue working with me, we will arrange a consultation. This will take one or two sessions, depending on the nature of your needs, and it will give us a chance to understand what we want to work on, and make a plan. We can decide to focus on a specific issue and agree on a set number of sessions, or we can consider therapy as an open-ended, existential process, with an explorative focus.
I offer therapy in English and Italian.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am an Italian Clinical Psychologist registered with both the HCPC and the Italian Council of Psychologists.
I worked for the Italian Health Care System, as well as in various NHS Mental Health Services.
Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
Health and Care Professions Council
The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.
They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.
Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.
