About me

What is my purpose?

To help you to unpack some of the stuff you carry around. I imagine a big, old rucksack that has maybe got really heavy - it might be causing you to not live your best life. I will help you unpack it when you are ready to do so, then we can examine the contents together. There may be stuff in there you want to keep, stuff you don't want anymore - we will only really know when we examine it. When we know what is causing you joy, pain, sadness, fear, and anger... you can choose what you want to keep, and what you don't.

You decide what to keep carrying, and what to discard.

Training, qualifications & experience

  • PGDip in Counselling from York St John University
  • MA in Counselling from York St John University
  • Registered member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP).

For my master's dissertation, I sought to understand how adult clients with ADHD experienced online counselling.  Whilst some participants preferred working remotely, and some in-person, what was apparent was that they all spoke of needing a therapeutic relationship in which they felt accepted and safe.

I have worked as a counsellor in placements at a local medical practice, York St John University's Community Centre, and York Mind.

I am currently working in private practice in Clifton Moor in York, seeing clients both face-to-face and online.  I am as flexible as possible in relation to moving sessions online, or looking at alternative times and days if clients need this; this might be related to work, health, or family issues, or to the client simply feeling too overwhelmed to attend in person.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

What are my values & principles?

Empathy - I will meet you where you are, not where I think you are, or you think you should be. You know your world better than I do, and I will seek to join you in it.

Acceptance - I will be open-minded, valuing your uniqueness and individuality.

Safety - Counselling may not always feel comfortable, it may sometimes feel really challenging. However, I assure you that you can share your thoughts, experiences and emotions with me, without fear of judgement.

Integrity - My work is guided by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy's Ethical Framework. I have my clients' best interests at the core of what I do. I am personally accountable, responsible, reflective, self-aware and truthful in how I work with clients.

A phrase often used is "a safe pair of hands" - someone who can be relied upon and consistent, no matter what.
