About me

As a qualified psychotherapist, I provide a kind and compassionate approach focussing on listening within a supportive, safe and confidential environment. My particular areas of interest are in the emotional wellbeing of young people; working with adults through addictions and addictive behaviours; difficulties in relationships; and issues associated with the long term effects of boarding school where we can reflect on difficult and often overwhelming feelings.

Following training in Montessori Pedagogy, with a focus on child development and psychology, I worked with children as a teacher and in SEN for over 15 years and I have a deep understanding of how children develop and the issues that can arise. I offer a person-centred approach integrating psychodynamic and existential methods, where I believe that the foundation to successful therapy starts with a strong therapeutic alliance within a safe and non-judgemental environment. Understanding the pressures that young people face today, and the difficulties they can endure, including anorexia and self-harm, I can help to find the courage to move forwards, building in coping mechanisms and with a focus on developing self-esteem and inner confidence.

A focal point of my work is in supporting individuals who attended boarding school during their childhood and in BOARDING SCHOOL SYNDROME.  Deepening my learning and knowledge in this area from my own experiences and through focussed training with Nick Duffell, who pioneered therapeutic work with ex-boarders, I have developed my ability in helping individuals work through an often complex and overlooked area of childhood.  Reflecting on the the psychological impact of adverse childhood experiences through a process of recognition, acceptance and change, I can help you to reconnect with your true self.  I integrate a person centred approach with psychodynamic methods to support a process of growth from unhelpful survival patterns towards authentic living and a sense of being.

I am specifically trained and am experienced in working with adults struggling with relationship issues and addictive behaviours.  Reflecting on past and present experiences can help uncover unhelpful behaviour patterns, which through the therapeutic process we can work to unpick and reframe, helping to improve your sense of autonomy and choice.

In my experience, working together with a professional therapist can be the turning point in unlocking life's potential through a process of emotional and psychological growth.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a qualified psychotherapist/ counsellor and have experience working with adults, children and young people.  I am experienced in working with individuals affected by drugs and alcohol and hold a specialist qualification in addiction from Stanford University.

My background is in education and in supporting young people with special educational needs and I have a special interest in the psychological impact of boarding schools having trained with Nick Duffell in specialist psychotherapy for ex-boarders and worked extensively in this area.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
