About me

My name is Ian.

I am a qualified Integrative Therapist up to BA (Bachelor’s Degree, level 6). I am working towards BACP accreditation. I have many more therapy skills, which are available upon request. I regularly attend continuing professional development (CPD) courses that increase my understanding of the human condition.

I have a private practice in Aberystwyth where I see clients in a Covid-19 aware environment on a Friday, and I am able to work with clients on-line via a range of different methods using webcam at other times during the week to suit your needs.

I am in my early fifties and came to counselling as a combination of life experience and need, which pointed me in this direction. I have a working knowledge around addiction, complex PTSD, complex bereavement, adverse childhood experiences (ACE’s) and can apply the 12-step model to all of the above topics. I use a range of tools, one of which is Emotional Freedom Technic (EFT).

I volunteer with a leading bereavement charity where I also deliver supervision for other bereavement volunteers. I have also volunteered in the past for a charity dealing with childhood sexual abuse (female and male).

How the "Counselling Directory" profiling works as a therapist is that I am given a selection of boxes to tick. This, however, is quite rigid and does not reflect the difficulties/issues people experience. As an integrative therapist I truly believe my purpose is to help you realise that you already have all the answers you need inside. My job is to help you find these to your satisfaction. Every client’s personal journey always results in me learning more as well. I do not see myself as an expert in any one problem however in depth my experience may be in that subject, because to say one is an expert seems arrogant. As a high percentage of all communication is non-verbal I have completed a great deal of training that affords me the skills to hear as much with my eyes as I do with my ears. I utilise all my skills and senses to facilitate a supportive, nurturing and challenging therapeutic environment.

Our first session is a place where we can discuss your needs, what your aims are and if I am able to help. We discuss our contract with each other and decide how we move forward. All my work is supervised and I will explain how that works whilst maintaining your confidentiality. I offer one hour sessions, but if the needs of the client require longer sessions to achieve the goals this can be arranged so as not to be impacted by the fear of 'not having enough time'.

I practice in the centre of Aberystwyth. At this location I see clients face to face. The location meets all of the Covid recommendations.

I also see clients online via webcam with a range of different types of software. If required I am able to do phone counselling.

If requested walk and talk sessions are also available offering a range of beautiful walks with privacy being a consideration.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

I am working as a therapist because life often throws a curve ball. How you catch it can define your future.

Life events happen. They only mean you are living life, but these events can have an impact on all your personal relationships, leaving you feeling alone. Talking therapies are a way of moving forward and I look forward to sharing that journey.
