About me

Hello my name is Phil. Thank you for taking an interest in my profile and may I acknowledge your courage in seeking help. I have been a client myself and I never underestimate just how difficult it can be to reach out and take the first step.

I am a Person Centred Counsellor. This model of counselling is based on the theory that each of us has within us the natural resources to live life as fully as we can. Sometimes we lose connection with these resources and one way to reconnect is through a therapeutic relationship which is collaborative, compassionate, authentic and free from judgment.

Types of Counselling

I have been trained in an integrative approach and have an understanding of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Transactional Analysis and Grief and Loss, as well as being Trauma Informed. I regularly participate in continued professional development and supervision.  As much as it is important for me to have an understanding of different counselling models, I truly believe that therapy is as unique and creative as you are, and so I am guided by what is right for you.

Experience

I have experience of working with people with a wide range of issues including chronic illness and disability, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, issues around self-esteem and identity, both male and female domestic abuse, relationships, LGBTQ+, neurodiversity, discrimination, suicidal ideation and working around trauma.

Supportive

I strive to provide a safe and impartial space to hopefully create the conditions necessary in order to help you understand and accept yourself. My aim is to try and gain an understanding of how you experience the world through your eyes by attentively listening to you and supporting you on your journey.

Trustworthy

I am fully qualified and insured and a member of the Information Commissioners Office to ensure my full compliance with your personal data as well as being DBS checked.

Counselling for all

I embrace diversity and endeavour to provide access to counselling for anyone who needs help and support, regardless of ability, race, age, gender, sexuality or social status. Even though mental health awareness is much improved, I understand that stigma still exists, and I am passionate about helping people to overcome this.

I myself have lived experience of mental health challenges and have benefited greatly from counselling. I also have a neurological health condition, Myalgic Enchephalomyelitis (M.E.) and have a good understanding of neurodiversity within my family.

Because of my experience of disability, I strive for inclusivity and understand the importance of flexibility. I provide home visits and can tailor your sessions to suit you, for example shorter sessions if necessary.

Contact

Thanks again for taking the time to read about me and please don't hesitate to contact me either by telephone or email if you have any further questions or if you feel that we can work together.  If not, may I wish you all the best going forward and in everything you do.

*Please note that I do not provide emergency out of hours support *

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Wheelchair user access
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

Please note that Heswall Hills counselling centre is wheelchair accessible and if that is not suitable, I can come to you.
