About me

A warm welcome to you

Every living system has an inborn intelligence which brings about growth. The seeds of crimson fountain grass can survive for six years, waiting until the conditions for germination are perfect. People grow when in the right environment and often wait years until it is right for them to open up.

Everyone has an inner knowing pointing to what they need and, importantly, what they want; you will have your word for this. Many things stop us from responding to and acting from inner knowing. Only some have been privileged with the safe and supportive environment necessary to flourish during childhood or adulthood - at home, in education, with work, across neighbourhoods, communities and sometimes in their country of origin.

Recovering mental and emotional wellbeing

Distress appears in many ways, disrupting routines, relationships, studies, work and family life.

How do you know if you're experiencing it? Common signs of distress are anxiety, angry outbursts, change in mood and appetite, sexual difficulties, addictions, emotional instability, relationship difficulties, loss of purpose, meaning and vitality, and sleep issues. The question becomes, do you feel supported? If not, would you like to?

Trust, honesty, acceptance and empathy with a counsellor can help you face your most difficult challenges. Could this be us? Your mind, body, and soul speak to you; listening takes courage. I can accompany you.

What does therapy with me involve?

What you are experiencing is occurring for a valid reason. We will explore what feels out of sync, whether physical, psychological, emotional, sexual, ecological, relational, or spiritual.

Counselling sessions last an hour weekly or fortnightly, in person or online. We will meet in my therapy room in Hereford town centre, or if you choose to work outdoors, we can meet by a nearby river, orchard, spring or woodland. I sometimes work in urban areas, too.

In our first session, we will discuss what led you to seek counselling. I will be open and supportive, and rather than share my opinion, I'll invite you to share your situation, and we will begin to explore what it is like to be you. Being listened to closely with acceptance can often bring relief and begin change.

After the first or second session, we will decide if therapy with me will be helpful. We will discuss your unique challenges, what you want to change, and the support you want to help achieve a more satisfying life.

If you prefer you can use art, poetry, sand tray, psychodrama, movement, two-chair work and outdoor therapy.

Experience

I have worked as an Integrative Psychotherapist in private practice since 2011, in secondary school and sixth form for two years, in higher education for ten years, hospice for one year, and NHS for five years. Before practising psychotherapy in East Yorkshire, I helped set up a charity and started community services to help families returning home with premature babies and a service to support those affected by life-limiting conditions.

I offer a genuine and authentic therapeutic relationship with kindness at its heart. I draw on various therapeutic approaches: Gestalt, developmental, relational, person-centred and transactional analysis. If you are interested in philosophy, my orientation is humanistic and existential. I am influenced by mysticism from different traditions, and as much as I am guided by psychotherapeutic and counselling theory, I embrace uncertainty and have discovered a vibrant life through personal defeat. I offer safety and warmth amid sometimes unfathomable pain and unanswered questions.

Therapy Approach

My therapy approach aims to increase self-understanding, self-acceptance, and authenticity, sometimes amid uncertainty and suffering: isolation, spiritual emptiness or despair. You may find yourself in a position where you cannot exercise choice, which can cause anguish.

I do not believe suffering is a symptom to manage; it is part of the ground of our being, a shared human experience. Finding a place with gentle and compassionate holding is vital until new meaning arrives. Counselling is one of many ways to attend to life crises, and it can complement other support.

About me

I like to laugh and value this in others. The dances of universal peace are one of my favourite things; they involve live music, singing, movement, lovely people and eating together. I spend time outside in nature daily; I might stand still and gaze at a tree, slowing breathing and bringing my senses alive, allowing the intricate details of its leaves to stand out and feeling their vibrant colours connect me. At times, awe and wonder strike. Nature sometimes reflects some helpful insight into my life. I especially like woods and river life. Sharing these experiences with others is one of my favourite
things to do. I offer clients the opportunity to work therapeutically outdoors with me.

Gain Insight and Skills

We can explore patterns of behaviours which prevent meaningful relationships and deepening a connection with the self. We can work with your different parts, including your inner child, shame, anxiety, low self-esteem, family dynamics, relational patterns,

You can expect to increase awareness of your needs, sensitivity to your feelings and ability to regulate emotions. This mindful approach builds increased tolerance for negative emotions and sensations. You will be able to improve your ability to view things from another perspective, gain interpersonal skills, and increase empathy for others. Your self-esteem can grow, and you can gain skills in decision-making.

Working with trauma

I trained with Babette Rothschild in Dublin and online with Pat Ogden, Peter Levine, Janina Fisher and Bessel Van Der Kolk, expert trauma therapists, authors and academics. I like how they translate complex science into self-help materials. I have successfully worked with single traumatic events, including accidents, invasive surgery, and many other presentations. I am committed to working with the effects of childhood trauma which usually requires a long-term commitment to therapy, which we can discuss to see if this is right for us.

Self-help

Psycho-education: I can provide reading and activities to help you between sessions at your request. I have a program of activities for working with trauma written by Pat Ogden and nature connection activities. I offer to work creatively when words are not enough, which is often the case when working with childhood trauma.

I welcome you to reach out and email or arrange a call if you want to discuss working together with me.
