About me

Hello, my name is Jess. I am a BACP registered (MBACP) Integrative Counsellor. I was born and raised in Aberdeen and have spent much of my life in Plymouth.

Over the last 16 years, I have an extensive experience of working in counselling and clinical psychology, university mental health and bereavement support services.

I hold specialisms and ongoing professional training in:

Trauma

Mental health, including anxiety, depression, bipolar and psychosis.

Low self esteem and negative thoughts and feelings that the person feels about themselves.

Relationship and social difficulties

Grief, bereavement and loss

Counselling men/males

Working with professional/workplace/higher education burnout and needing future career exploration and clarity

Developmental conditions

Traumatic brain injuries and neurological conditions, including epilepsy and trauma related seizures.

Military and veteran therapy and mental health

There are so many different reasons that can bring a client to counselling. It takes a lot of courage to reach out and that is why I am committed to engaging with you effectively and safely. Counselling should be a space to fully express what you might be holding on to yourself.

Counselling is a unique experience with clients holding different needs and preferences that can also change over the counselling timespan. I therefore flexibly change my approach to your needs and wishes. There is no limit on how long you would like to meet with me.

I am a remote counsellor who provides short and long term counselling via Zoom or phone call according to client preference.

Overarching, across clients, my core focuses are:

Holding a safe and trusting relationship and space so that clients feel comfortable, valued and respected as an individual with their own internal resources.

For the client to feel empowered to manage difficult circumstances, enhance their quality of life and access their strengths.

For the client to be supported to explore and develop a deeper understanding of:

Internal processes, including emotions and thoughts

Behaviour

Relationships

Effects on physical well-being

The effect of the past on the present, including trauma or attachment difficulties

How to promote and develop positive and helpful changes.

You might be experiencing emotional difficulties, encountering challenging circumstances, needing support to work through life changes, relationship difficulties or loss.

You could be encountering challenges with your behaviour or anger or feel lost, believing that you are not the person you once were and life is not controlled. You might also hold patterns that have been unhelpful for you and caused distress.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
