About me

Hello, and thank you for looking at my profile. It can be a confusing and daunting time when you first make the decision to begin therapy; or equally you may experience a sense of relief that you are taking a step forward to making life easier for you. But how do you go about choosing which type of therapy is best for you, and with whom?

Let me explain a little about how I work: I work integratively, meaning that I am able to draw on many different elements of psychotherapy in order to tailor the therapy to each individual's needs. By working this way, the whole of my attention is on you as a person and what your needs may be at that particular moment, rather than on following a set of pre-determined steps. I have an easy, sensitive, relational approach; I am experienced at weaving different therapeutic techniques together, and I work very much in collaboration with each individual. I see individuals for both short-term focused work (6-12 sessions), and for long-term ongoing work.

Psychotherapy can help you explore the difficulties you are experiencing, and understand the reasons why those difficulties may have occurred. It helps you see things from a new perspective, and so bring about changes in unhelpful thought patterns and behaviour, and the sensation of being lost or stuck, so that you can move on with your life. It will also help you to gain insight, positivity, a wider breadth of thinking, the ability to feel more in control, and a stronger sense of self along the way.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have been working in psychotherapy since 2003. My background encompasses both the private sector and two NHS Mental Health Trusts, working both 1:1 and in groups, and includes working in a cutting-edge Therapeutic Community. I have also worked for a mental health charity and as a student counsellor at an inner London university, so I have seen a diverse range of clients from many differing backgrounds and cultures, and with a wide range of presenting problems throughout my career. I continue to work with a wide variety of clients and presentations. I also work as a supervisor and mentor to other psychotherapists, and head up Beverley Blackman Associates, a psychotherapy, supervision and coaching clinic in Mayfair (please see website for more details on all our therapists and the services we provide).

My previous career as a lawyer has also given me much insight into the high levels of stress, and the weight of expectations, that many people experience in their day-to-day working lives, and the effects that this can have on their relationships both in and out of work, and on their health in general. Hence I also maintain strong connections with other medical and mental health specialists, complementary practitioners, and professionals from the business and legal sectors.

For in-person appointments, the clinic is based in a discreet location on Davies St, Mayfair. We appreciate that people's busy lives mean that face-to-face sessions are not always possible; to accommodate this, all our therapists also work by Zoom, FaceTime, Skype etc or by phone.

Professional Recommendations:

Sam Jones, Award-Winning Business Coach, Millenial Keynote Speaker, CEO of TwentySomeone and SamJonesCoaching.com: 'Expertise is common within the industry, but real passion is not. That is what Beverley radiates. She is warm, articulate and in turn, completely engaging. Beverley is a diamond and I will be recommending clients to her.'

Dr Maria Luca, author of 'The Therapeutic Frame in the Clinical Context' and 'Sexual Attraction in Therapy', former Reader in Psychotherapy & Counselling Psychology, Editor, JPCRR, Regents University London:  'Beverley is attentive, clever and highly articulate. Her energy and enthusiasm are positively contagious and her capacity for theorising on complex clinical issues is to be commended. She has the rare talent of moving between realms of thought, negotiating clinical understandings and unpacking client presentations. Without a doubt Beverley has developed rapidly into a very fine therapist.'

Charlotte Fox Weber, former Head of Psychotherapy, The School of Life, London and author of 'What We Want': "Beverley is an excellent, dedicated psychotherapist. She is thoughtful, bright, curious, and attentive. She's incredibly competent and skilled."

Areas of counselling I deal with

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I offer sports psychotherapy for professional / semi-professional elite athletes and players. This works at a deeper level than sports psychology, and explores the reasons why you may not be reaching your peak performance in more depth.

I also work extensively with those going through family break-ups, divorces or other family law-based court cases, and I have connections with excellent lawyers, and divorce and mediation services.

I work with difficulties in all kinds of relationships, including those with partners, family, friends, work colleagues, extended family or adopted/foster families, relationships at school/higher education etc.

I also offer short-term coaching sessions which can be specifically focused on difficulties or changes at work, college or school.

Additional information

You are more than welcome to a brief phone call before committing to an initial appointment - please contact me to schedule a call via the contact form, by email, or via the website, as I cannot answer the phone when I am with clients.

An initial appointment is a good opportunity to discuss in more depth what difficulties you are experiencing, and to talk about how therapy can help. Sessions are once weekly, but can be more frequent if this is something that we agree is needed.

The fee for the initial appointment remains at £85, and the ongoing fee is negotiated during the appointment. This is dependent on which therapist you see, and the time of day of the ongoing appointment.

For clients covered by insurance companies, the fee for both initial appointment and ongoing sessions is commensurate with the appropriate fees for the Mayfair/Harley St area, which are approved by each health insurance company. I am validated by Aetna, Aviva, Cigna, Healix, Vitality, Simply Health, WPA and other health insurance companies. We also have various other insurance cover within the clinic.

I currently have one in-person psychotherapy appointment on Wednesdays, and two short-term focused therapy/coaching sessions available online on Mondays.
