About me

About me and my therapy practice
'Your present circumstances don't really determine where your are at all, they merely determine where you start'....

'The curios paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am ,then I can change'

Carl Rogers ...

I'm guessing if you are on this website scanning through suitable counsellor's you are contemplating seeking help for yourself. Maybe those normal coping strategies are not working, the ones that you've always been able to rely on in the past. Perhaps they are draining you of every bit of energy both mentally , physically and emotionally.  This can be exhausting and cause you to feel isolated and alone.

Whether you choose me to work with you as your therapist or not ,I'd like to say a huge welcome and heartfelt genuine well done! you have actually got this far reading this, and come on this website seeking a counsellor. So let's acknowledge that, recognising you need support is courageous but also a little scary..

So, why choose me ? Choosing a therapist is no easy feat. You don't know if you can trust them or will even like them. I know, I've been there to. So, what makes me different to anyone else? Well the fact of the matter is I don't know! Finding the right person for you is dependant on so many factors. I suppose ultimately it comes down to do they 'get you'. What I'm sure of is there should be no in between. The professional relationship that will develop may become a turning point in your life, so getting it right is important.

So let's look at the technical stuff. I'm an integrative counsellor. So what does that mean to you?  It means I work intuitively and creatively using various modalities to help you. So what do I offer? Well I guess I offer me. I will hear you, see you, sit with you and not judge you. There's no space for rejection with me, which I hope will help you to truly express how you feel. I will offer strategies to help you cope when you leave my room. More importantly, I believe I'm privileged to get an insight into peoples lives. I have an optimistic perspective on human nature and truly believe that everyone has the chance to change, providing they are willing to put the time in to do that.

Practice description
I started my journey as a counsellor in 2010 and qualified in 2014. I continually update my training. I can also work creatively offering walk and talk sessions these  can be with my dog if you wish.  Research indicates that being within nature and being around animals can improve our mental health significantly. I can support you if you find it hard to travel or use public transport. This is a very common social anxiety problem. I can also do home visits with negotiation.

I have worked within trauma for many years and helped both adults, children and young people of all genders who have experienced sexual violence and abuse.

My  main areas of  expertise is working with anyone who has been in a coercive and narcissistic relationship who maybe have PTSD or CPTSD. I also work extensively with anxiety and depression, and trauma related issues.

I have worked as a school counsellor and know how the state and the independent education system works. This can help hugely when seeking help for your child. I may be able to steer you to a better understanding of how you can help your child. I also work for a charity with young people who have experienced domestic abuse.

We are now living in unprecedented times , many feel uncertain about their future with relationships and employment. This can often exacerbate anxiety and depression. The current situation within the world has left everyone with a sense of fear.

My first session
Initially I offer a free 15 minute consultation phone call. This gives you an opportunity to ask me any questions and tell me a little bit about yourself and why you are seeking help. Thereafter, we can arrange a first appointment. The first appointment is not a free session. I will send you via email my agreement information for you to read through before we proceed.

The first hour long appointment is really an opportunity to talk to me openly about your feelings and how you want to work with me. I may do an initial assessment and take a few notes to guide me for future sessions. However, sessions are tailored to you so I will always try my utmost to work with you in the way you want.

Online/telephone counselling can be equally as effective as face to face work. I offer the same level of connection regardless of what format you decide you want. You are always in control of sessions, they are yours to decide what you want and how often you would like them. Most however start off with six sessions. This is not set in stone we can work in a way that suits your lifestyle.

Ultimately having therapy is a chance to walk forward into a positive life making changes that suit you at a pace that feels right. But remember, I don't know all the answers and do not have a magic wand . But what I do know is I will sit alongside you and offer you some solutions and understanding which will enable us to focus on making the here and now a better place to be part of.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
