About me

Hello and thank you for visiting my website. My name is Emma Compton and I am an Art Psychotherapist specialising in Psychological therapy for children, adolescents and adults.

I have over 23 years of experience working with children and adolescents in different educational settings and 7 years of experience working with mental health services in the U.K. I have worked with people who experience acute difficulties including, anxiety, depression, stress, loss and grief, trauma, and relationship difficulties. I am also used to working with acute and debilitating difficulties such as eating disorders, OCD and hallucinations. I have worked with an Autism diagnosis or ADHD for many years.

Finding the right help at a time when everything feels distressing can be difficult. I am keen to offer a confidential and professional service with a reflective approach to therapy. I can tailor therapy to your needs using other integrated psychological models.

Individual Psychological Therapy

You may be seeking therapy for many different reasons or with one concern in mind. To help you most effectively, I offer an initial assessment, which will be focused on understanding your concerns in context. We will discuss some of your past and present experiences that may be contributing to your distress. You may also wish to complete some general screening measures to help gain further clarity on goals for therapy and which may also assist by showing improvement over time.

We will also spend some time highlighting personal strengths and how to increase resilience. After this initial assessment phase, we will discuss a therapy plan and the number of anticipated sessions moving forward. My priority is to explore and understand your difficulties. Through externalising the difficulties, over time and in a safe environment it may become possible to view the situation differently, identifying what could be maintaining the problem and focusing on developing alternative strategies for coping which you would be encouraged to practice.

Below are a few examples (but not limited to) of difficulties where I am able to offer treatment. Please note that many people may not find it easy to identify or label their difficulty. If you are unsure, we can discuss this during an initial assessment.

Clinical Supervision

I can offer clinical supervision to both therapists and trainee Art Psychotherapists who are currently training. I can offer clinical supervision in person (depending on where you live) or online.

Please contact me for further information about clinical supervision.

Training, qualifications & experience

I trained as an art psychotherapist at Leeds Beckett. My training is Psychodynamic, but my approach is Integrative. I draw from different theoretical models and believe each approach has its merits.

I am a full member of HCPC (reg. art psychotherapist) and also a member of BACP as well as being a member of BAAT (British Association of Art Therapists).

My background is in education; I have taught KS 1-4 in mainstream and spent many years working in specialist settings. Most of my experience has been working with adolescents with mental health difficulties, a diagnosis of Autism and with adolescents who experience visual and auditory hallucinations and psychosis.

HCPC
Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.

Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.
