About me

Hi, I am Catherine and thank you for your time.

Perhaps you have taken this tentative step (clicking on this site) because you are looking for something. Maybe things in your life are not adding up and it is very difficult to pinpoint it on your own. This unease can be because you are wondering if the life you are living is the one for you. Maybe it is: you have found the right track and it just needs tweaking. Or maybe not and this question is too overwhelming at the moment. But there remains the underlying question of how to create a life that is worth living for you. Is the life you are living the one for you? In other words, are you the ‘captain of your ship?’ or serving as a midshipman to someone else's?

Perhaps you have reached a crossroad in your life or you have come crashing against the (painful) truth and it can no longer be avoided? Perhaps you have come to the realisation that you can’t go on living like this and maybe you need help. You realise that you don’t deserve this ... you are worth so much more. We would gently explore this and the things that may be stopping you: your fears and inhibitions.

You may be having to deal with a number of ‘symptoms’ or presentations such as:

  • Addictions
  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Bereavement and trauma associated with sudden bereavement
  • Chronic illness
  • Depression and low moods
  • Disassociation from self
  • A financial change: money does not lie
  • Job loss, unemployment
  • Loss of self. Low self-esteem
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Eating disorders
  • Suicidal ideation
  • The loss of someone to suicide
  • Divorce and separation
  • Rage: murderous and otherwise
  • Relationships
  • Boundaries and knowing your own boundaries
  • Gender and defining/understanding yourself
  • Borderline presentation
  • Narcissistic presentation

These effects can be the starting point of therapy and may lead you to discover the underlying cause. Your symptom is a symbol which provides us with a clue as to what is really going on within you.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

My Approach:

Just to say: Therapy does not work miracles and does not provide you with a magic pill. As your therapist, I will act like a life compass. Here to help you keep focused and aligned with what is important to you. Here to help you recognise when you have drifted away from your purpose and steer you towards what brings you joy. Together we will head away from the rocks, when you are ready, and towards the open Sea, towards your true self. I am a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and work with the following: the Unconscious, Dreams, Transferences and the relationship in the room (between you and me) and how it is a mirror reflecting all the relationships outside of the room. The sessions can start face-to-face but as the work gets deeper, moving towards the couch which is often preferable as it gives you the freedom to face away from the therapist and truly be yourself as you are facing beyond the couch into the yonder of your own mind. You are building the relationship with yourself and no longer feeling so disassociated.

This will be a quiet space for you to share something of yourself, or try to unpick the feelings of being overwhelmed and being misunderstood. I offer a platform where you will experience what it is like to be listened to, perhaps for the very first time, and to be fully understood. Therapy is also a safe place where the boundaries are set and clear: time limited, predictable: same time every week, unchanging location, structured fee, confidential etc.

The quest works on three levels. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy will help you gain some insight as to why you are feeling the way you do in the present, in the here and the now. This is the first level. Then we will work therapeutically together to explore the symptoms and what lies behind the current feelings of conflict and pain. This is the second level. Then we will begin to understand your mind, and who you are in all of this: this will start the connection to yourself and ultimately the engagement with the outside world. You will perhaps feel less isolated, less alienated. Some of this may involve linking into your childhood and your past and into your unconscious but it is only as a way to discover your mind, what has meaning for you, and the clues that give you an indication of who you are. This is the third level. In this way, therapy will link you to yourself, and then you to the other in the therapeutic alliance.
