About me

PROMOTING AWARENESS AND SUPPORTING MEN 'S MENTAL HEALTH & WELL-BEING

Hello and a warm welcome. I am Richard, a qualified counsellor and registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

I am based in Yeovil, Somerset. Offering short and long-term therapy, I work with all adults and young people who come to me with a diverse range of presenting issues. I provide both face-to-face and online counselling with availability during the day and evenings.

I understand that many men often face unique challenges that can be daunting to address. As a male counsellor, I can empathise deeply with the difficulties men encounter concerning their mental well-being. I believe it is time to confront the stereotypes, dismantle the silence, and openly acknowledge the mental health struggles that many men endure.

It is a common expectation for men to be stoic and resilient to emotional turmoil. However, I know that many men struggle with anxiety, depression, relationships and low self-esteem. I want you to know that I am here to support you, and I want to emphasise that seeking counselling is not a weakness but a courageous step, a show of strength toward healing and self-discovery.

Having personally experienced and overcome anxiety & depression, I understand the stigma and challenges many men face when dealing with their mental health. Therefore, I am committed to providing a safe and empathic space where men can freely express their emotions, fears, and worries. I understand that men, like anyone else, experience a wide array of emotions, and acknowledging these feelings is the first step towards growth.

In my practice, I use an integrative approach that combines different therapeutic methods, such as CBT, person-centred and psychodynamic theory. This allows me to tailor the therapy to your specific needs and goals rather than following a one-size-fits-all model. I work with you to explore and understand your feelings, thoughts, and behaviours and how they affect your well-being.

I don’t give advice or tell you what to do, but rather, I empower you to find your own solutions and make positive changes in your life. My purpose is to guide you through life's obstacles, providing understanding and support every step of the way.

If you are interested in working with me, don't hesitate to contact me to book your FREE 15-minute initial phone consultation.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Training, qualifications & experience

In my private practice, I have had the privilege of working with a diverse range of individuals, which has allowed me to gain extensive experience in addressing various personal and emotional challenges. My time at Yeovil College provided me with valuable experience in supporting adolescents and young adults aged 16 and above, helping them navigate the unique complexities of this stage in life.

Additionally, my practice has been enriched by my volunteer work with Mind in Somerset, where I supported adults facing a range of complex and multifaceted issues. This invaluable experience has deepened my understanding of individuals' diverse needs, enabling me to offer compassionate and effective support to all my clients.

Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills
Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies
Level 4 Diploma in Counselling Practice
Level 5 Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling
Certificate in Online and Telephone Counselling
Certificate in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)

I frequently participate in personal development courses to enhance my knowledge and skills, enabling me to maintain a high level of professionalism in my work. These courses contribute to my continuous growth and help me stay up-to-date with my field's latest practices and standards. I am a registered member of the BACP and adhere to their code of ethics.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
