About me

For the past 16 years I have had the privilege of counselling and working with older children and young people.

During adolescence young people experience more changes in every area of their lives than they will every again, physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Young people’s bodies, values and beliefs are evolving and changing very quickly and they have begun the experience of developing and sustaining relationships. They also have educational demands in the form of frequent exams and assessments that can cause considerable stress.

Along with these demands each young person and their family will encounter situations that are confronting:

  • separation/divorce
  • bereavement
  • self harm
  • substance abuse
  • new parental relationships

...to name but a few.

I believe the relationship between the young person and counsellor to be one of the most important aspects of counselling.  I call myself an integrative counsellor and my practice is informed by different approaches. I believe one of the most important aspects of counselling is the relationship between the counsellor and young person. In order to establish and develop the relationship, I aim to be non-judgemental, empathic and genuine. I try to see the client’s feelings, circumstances and issues from their point of view and feel it is extremely important to carefully listen to the young person. I work collaboratively with whatever the young person wishes to talk about.

I try to help the person gain an understanding of their feelings, the reason they came to see me and explore possible ways forward. Young people have had and extremely difficult time during and as a result of the Pandemic.

I believe counselling can help young people process their experience of the Pandemic and together with the counsellor identify problems and work out ways to improve their life experience.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a degree in Fine Art and am a qualified teacher. Before qualifying  as a counsellor I taught Art in Further Education and secondary schools. Shortly after qualifying as a counsellor I became a school counsellor and for a number of years was also a part time counsellor in Higher Education. Five years ago I started my private practice.

I am very keen to continue with my training and regularly attend CPD training.  I have also developed an interest in EcoTherapy and Walk and Talk and intend to gain further qualifications in this area post pandemic.

I am a registered member of the BACP and a member of the BACP Children, Young People and Families Division.

  • BA (Hons) 2:1 Fine Art, PGCE, Advanced Diploma in Humanistic/Existential Counselling. 2001-2005
  • School Counsellor P/T 2005-2021, Counsellor P/T UWIC (now Cardiff Met University), 2006-2010, Private Practice 2016 onwards.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

I appreciate that not all young people find it easy to express themselves using words and I believe in working flexibly to meet the needs of my clients. I have a degree in Fine Art and believe that creative forms of communication such as drawing, music, writing, photography can help people express and process their feelings.
