About me

My name is Carrie and I currently work with adults like yourself in a local private practice.

It can be hard to imagine what feeling okay would be like when worry, sadness or self-hate have been a constant part of your mental life.  For many, this state of mind can feel permanent, as if it is just personality.  People who come for counselling want more from life than this.  In a sense, we all know what is ‘wrong’ or what has happened to us to make us suffer, feel numb, miserable or unsatisfied.  It is this knowing, healing part of ourselves which searches these lists and I welcome and cheer you as you trust and follow it.  So how can I help?  I am a Person-Centred Counsellor.  I offer an alliance with you in which you can tell your story and follow your own unique path to healing.  I follow the teachings of Carl Rogers (please Google him) who came to understand that therapeutic healing involves addressing the conflict that can rage in our minds when we have come to mistrust and fear our inner selves.

A central principle of the Person-Centred approach is that the client is the expert in their own life, and is best placed to set the scope of the therapeutic conversation.  I work with people who wish to address specific problems, such as dealing with workplace bullying or thinking through a difficult relationship.   I also work with survivors of abuse, in deep appreciation of their difficult life journeys, and the despair and desperation that many experience.  I have a particular interest in helping people to deal with adverse developmental processes. These can range from school bullying, child abuse in all its forms, ‘scapegoating’, family alcoholism and ‘narcissistic’ and sexual abuse.  Other difficult early experiences, such as emotional and psychological neglect or abuse can leave us feeling we have no real reason to feel so bad!

In a safe therapeutic conversation we can reflect on our beliefs about ourselves and who we are, on our problems and circumstances and on others from our past and in our present. I work alongside and help to explore and understand these experiences and encourage emotional regulation, self-care, and self-awareness, building mental strength and confidence.

Training, qualifications & experience

BA Sociology 1989

PGCE 1991

BSc Psychology 2010

Postgraduate Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling (Distinction)

My own developmental experiences led me to study Sociology, with a view to understanding the social context of psychological disadvantage.

My desire to make a difference to other children’s life experiences led me to train as a primary school teacher, working initially with early stages and later, children with disabilities.

This fed my interest in personality development, and I studied for a degree in Psychology through the Open University.

Finally, I felt that the most direct way to explore and address the distress I could see around me was by training as a therapeutic counsellor.

Member organisations

COSCA
College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSCA)

COSCA is the professional body for counselling and psychotherapy in Scotland, and seeks to advance all forms of counselling and psychotherapy and the use of counselling skills by promoting best practice and through the delivery of a range of sustainable services. COSCA Counsellor Accreditation is a pathway to entry onto the UKRC.

It is a requirement of all individual and organisational members of COSCA to abide by its Statement of Ethics and Code of Practice and be accountable to the Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
