Training, qualifications & experience
Tony has a first degree in biochemistry wherein he studied the biochemistry of mood and behaviour. Whilst working in the City of London he gained a postgraduate qualification in business management and a postgraduate diploma in marketing.
After a successful career in finance he studied for a Masters degree in person-centred therapy. His PhD thesis was on 'The clinical effectiveness of the person-centred psychotherapies: The impact of the therapeutic relationship'. In this he studied progress through counselling of 321 clients of 27 therapists, including 137 of his own clients. He was awarded the British Association for Counselling and Psycotherapy (BACP) 2011 prize for Outstanding Research Project for his PhD thesis in which he showed that person-centred therapy was as effective as other forms of therapy, including CBT, and that a good therapeutic relationship predicted good counselling outcome.
Tony has a wide range of experience including working with younger and older adults, those facing extreme adversity and hugely successful individuals.
Tony has experience of supervising therapists from all the main schools of therapy.
Member organisations
school Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information
Tony really enjoys doing this type of work and would welcome your enquiry. The research evidence is that getting on well with your counsellor (or supervisor) makes an important contribution to good outcome. His approach is to meet with potential clients/supervisees and find out from you 'do I seem like someone you can work with on this?' He charges for initial sessions. Tony sees clients Monday to Saturday and prefers to work with clients during the daytime, including weekend daytimes. He can usually arrange a mutually convenient time to meet up within one week.
