Supervision details

I supervise experienced practitioners: therapists, coaches and supervisors who are already good at what they do and want somewhere serious to think about it.

That includes supervision of supervision, and consultancy on the work that tends not to fit anywhere else. Difficult clients, difficult colleagues, a caseload that has become heavy, or the particular isolation of being the person everyone else brings their problems to.

I also work with practitioners who are active on social media, or who want to be. Putting your clinical thinking in public raises questions most supervision never touches: what is safe to say, what belongs to your clients, how visibility changes the work, and how to stay recognisably yourself in a format that rewards being someone else. I write and publish in this space myself, so these are live questions for me too.

Most of my supervisees work with me online, from anywhere in the world. In person at Horseheath, near Cambridge, if you would rather.

How I work

My doctorate was on the clinical effectiveness of the person-centred psychotherapies, looking at 321 clients of 27 therapists, and it won BACP's 2011 prize for Outstanding Research Project. It found that the quality of the therapeutic relationship predicted outcome.

Two things done in supervision do show up in client outcomes: collecting structured client feedback, and working properly with countertransference. Both are central to how I supervise. I have a particular interest in supervisees who want to use outcome measures with their own clients, and I can show you how to make them tell you something you did not already know. You will not be required to use them.

I supervise practitioners from all the main schools of therapy, and I hold a certificate and a diploma in clinical supervision.

Fees

Supervision of supervision and supervision of senior practitioners: £155 per hour.
Group and organisational supervision: from £345 per hour, by negotiation.

Starting

The first session is paid, and it is a mutual assessment. You are working out whether you would grow under my guidance. I am working out whether I am the right person for what you are bringing. Either of us can say no.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
