About me

Hi, I am Susan Smalley a fully qualified EMDR therapist and BACP accredited counsellor. I work with adults of all ages from my office in Nottingham and Belper. I also work with clients via Zoom and over the telephone.

Sometimes the daily stresses in life can build to a point where it impacts on your daily life and you feel unable to cope anymore. This may be affecting your relationship with those closest to you and your enjoyment of life generally. You may be feeling anxious about the little things, experiencing low mood or unable to feel motivated. Maybe you are struggling to process difficult traumas from the past that are affecting your self-confidence and belief in yourself. Perhaps you’ve been drinking more than you would normally, sleeping less, spending more and have realised you need support to make changes in your life.

I will offer you a confidential space where you can explore what is happening for you. I use a person-centred approach, which I hope will help you to make sense of your previous life experiences and current circumstances. I will listen empathically and without judgment as you explore what is going on for you. I believe the relationship between the therapist and client is essential, so I work relationally to build trust and safety.

My areas of expertise include trauma & PTSD, depression, anxiety, bereavement, negative events in childhood, attachment issues, domestic abuse & relationship issues.

Training, qualifications & experience

My academic counselling qualifications and further training include:

  • BACP Registered Member MBACP (Accred)
  • BA (Hons) in Humanistic Counselling (Nottingham University)
  • Counselling for Depression (CfD)
  • Foundation Certificate in Bereavement Care
  • Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR)

I predominantly work in the national NHS IAPT team, with adults experiencing a range of mental health issues and enduring mental distress including complex trauma/PTSD.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Further information

Whilst EMDR is in no way a shortcut it can offer clients the opportunity to process traumatic memories without having to speak too much about your experience if you do not wish to. This can be comforting for clients to know if they fear opening up something particularly difficult in therapy. However, you will need to share information about your past so we can establish if it’s safe to work together in this way. We can explore this more if you wish to book a free telephone or Zoom introductory call.

Below is a useful link to give you a quick insight of what to expect from EMDR:

Whatever the issue(s) you are currently struggling with, please do get in contact, by email or telephone. If I think I can help you, we will start with a free initial conversation to see if we ‘gel’. I assure you I will always work with your best interests at the heart of what I do.
