About me

My name is Seán, and I am a qualified counsellor currently registered with BACP. As I currently work in the charity sector, I have extensive experience working with a very broad spectrum of clients, of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds, sexualities, and gender expressions. As a result of this, I have sought additional training on many topics, such as domestic violence, and the transgender experience in Northern Ireland.

Additionally, in my recent education at Ulster University, I undertook some research into social anxiety, giving me a more specialist knowledge of that topic.

While I am trained integratively, I work mostly psychodynamically. What this means is I am well suited to helping you understand why you are feeling the way that you are, and by understanding it, we better understand ourselves, and can live more authentically and organically. It is my belief that there is a reason for all of our feelings and behaviours.

I cannot promise I will be able to help you, as I have never met you. What I can promise, is that I will work with you and do my utmost to help us both better understand what is going on for you, and therefore what we can do to get you living a life that makes more sense to you, that is more more meaningful and comfortable for you.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a Foundation Degree in Counselling, and in addition to this I have a BSc (Hons.) in Counselling from Ulster University. I am currently undertaking the CPCAB Level 6 in Therapeutic Supervision.

I have worked in the charitable sector for many years, specifically in suicide prevention - and since forming my own private practice I have gained a broad level of experience with people from many different backgrounds and experiences.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Additional information

It is important to me that people get the help they need - and so if money is an issue I am more than happy to discuss it.

Further information

I am explicitly LGBT-positive, and a cornerstone of my practice is neither ignoring nor pathologising any marginalised identities my clients may belong to.
