About me
Lots of us face challenging situations at some stage in our lives, which can be difficult to manage. It's not always easy or appropriate to talk with family or friends and sometimes we worry that bringing something old and/or hidden up to the surface will cause more problems. I offer a confidential and non-judgemental space where we can work together to help you develop insight and understanding by exploring how your present situation might be impacted by past experiences and people from your past and/or present.
I'm a qualified, experienced psychodynamic counsellor and EMDR practitioner working with adults, primarily online. I work with people facing emotional difficulties, like sadness, anxiety, depression, loneliness, and fear and with people who have experienced difficult and/or abusive relationships. I offer weekly sessions where we will work at your pace.
I appreciate that it can feel daunting to reach out. If you would like to get in touch to talk about how I can help you, please call, or email me. Your first session is an opportunity to see whether you think we can work together. If you’d like more information about my practice and what I offer, please take a look at my website Sam Southey Counselling. I'll always reply to messages within 24 hours, so please check spam/junk folders if you don't receive a reply.

Member organisations
school Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
The British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) is a professional association, representing the profession of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
The organisation is itself made up of fourteen member organisations and BPC accredits the trainings of its member organisations. An individual who qualifies from one of these trainings is then eligible for entry into the BPC's register.
BPC registrants are governed by a code of ethics, a policy of continuing professional development, a statement on confidentiality and a complaints procedure. The BPC is a Member Society of the European Federation for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in the Public Sector (EFPP). Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information
Psychodynamic counselling is a form of talking therapy where we meet weekly for one-to-one counselling with sessions lasting 50 minutes. They are usually on the same day and time each week and we can work together over the long term, or for a limited time, normally 12 sessions. You decide on the pace of counselling.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) involves focusing on a past incident that is causing you distress in the present day. You may have a memory or an image connected to what happened, or you may experience thoughts that are unconnected to the situation they occur in. EMDR isn't necessarily about the eye movements, but what this movement does to our brain. This bilateral movement facilitates a desensitisation process for a traumatic memory along with cognitive restructuring.
EMDR is one of the therapies recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) for the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It can help to reduce the intensity of feelings attached to a past incident and/or trauma.
Counselling is an invitation to speak freely about the things that matter and offers a safe space free from judgement, where you can learn to listen to yourself and be heard without preconceptions.
We can work remotely where your sessions take place online via video or by telephone and your counselling sessions take place in a quiet private room to ensure your privacy is maintained. Online counselling and therapy can be as effective as in-person sessions.
What is important is that you have a space where you can speak confidentially without being overheard.
