About me

I am a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist working with adults in private practice as well as in an NHS Complex Needs department. I have around ten years of experience in NHS mental health services, including inpatient units, child and adolescent (CAMHS) specialist community services, adult psychological therapy teams and crisis resolution community services. I have previously been involved in research and auditing on the effectiveness and outcomes of psychological therapies in collaboration with the Child Outcomes Research Consortium (CORC) and the Anna Freud Centre.

I trained in psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman Clinic. I am registered and accredited with the British Psychoanalytic Council and am a member of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists. I am a graduate member of the British Psychological Society and an Associate Member of the Institute of Group Analysis. I have previously completed trainings with the Institute of Psychoanalysis and Institute of Group Analysis.

Consulting Room

I work mainly in-person, though online/phone sessions can be arranged if needed.

My consulting room is near the center of Reading, postcode RG1.

Parking is available. The room is about 15 minutes walk from Reading Train Station. Nearest buses are the No. 4, X4 and 17.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy is an evidence-based form of therapy which can effectively treat emotional problems and a wide range of mental health conditions. This therapy addresses underlying issues and causes, often from your past, which may be concerning you or affecting your relationships with others. It is interested in how aspects of the unconscious mind may in fact be driving current issues in your life, or can be in conflict with other needs, wishes or feelings.

In your sessions you will be encouraged to talk freely and to look deeper into your problems and worries. It differs from many other talking therapies in that it aims to help people make deep-seated change in personality and emotional development, alongside relieving troubling symptoms. It can help you discuss feelings you have about yourself and other people, particularly family and those close to you.

Some people seek help for specific reasons, such as trauma, eating disorders, psycho-somatic conditions, obsessional behaviour, or phobic anxieties. Some seek help for underlying feelings of depression or anxiety, difficulties in concentrating, dissatisfaction in work or in marriage, or for an inability to form satisfactory relationships. It may benefit anyone.

I usually recommend having an initial consultation meeting of around 90 minutes. This consultation is a chance for me to hear about you and to begin to understand what has brought you to psychotherapy and what you hope to gain through the process. It will also give you a sense of what it is like for us to be together and whether a psychodynamic way of working is right for you.

Together we will determine whether psychodynamic therapy will be valuable to you and so whether to continue. If psychotherapy does not seem the most suitable approach I can make recommendations for alternative forms of treatment and support.
