About me

I have over ten years experience of working with children, adults, couples and families, aiming to help people explore challenging situations or relationships, toward understanding how particular difficulties have risen and help you work through this time. I specialise in complex mental health and support individuals and families who have been affected. I have seven years experience working with children and teenagers who have Learning Disabilities and issues relating to school. I also see clients for various other struggles and work collaboratively to explore what is behind their anxiety, depression and to build self-esteem.

We all face challenges and experience problems that can affect us in different ways. Sometimes this can put pressure on individuals, couples, families and relationships and affect wellbeing. Together we will talk about your difficulties and explore ways to overcome or minimise the effects they have on your daily life.

My approach is friendly and collaborative. I provide a safe, supportive, confidential and non-judgemental place for you to explore and work through difficulties in order to foster a greater sense of wellbeing.

I offer a range of NICE recommended therapies: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic, Person Centred, Integrative and Solution Focused. I believe in tailoring the therapy to my client's needs. Often, the therapeutic package I offer will draw on a mix of therapeutic techniques designed to optimise individual and couples' mental wellbeing.

Please contact me either by phone or E-mail if you would like an appointment.

I offer a free telephone consultation to explain how I work, what to expect, an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have and to see if I would be the right counsellor.

Experience

I can offer CBT on a short term and long term basis depending on what you prefer. I have practiced CBT in both NHS and private for seven years. . I have worked in mental health now for over thirteen years in various clinical settings alongside both males and females needing support for different difficulties. I currently work as a Service Manager for a young person service. I have up to four years experience at managerial level, mainly in supported and semi-independent services with clients suffering from mental health and Learning Disabilities. I have over five years experience working intensely with young children needing Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) to support them with a range of Learning Disabilities such as; Autism, ADHD and Global Developmental Delay.

Working as a Behavioural Tutor and as an Assertive Outreach Tutor with children and young adults in the community has allowed me to utilise my skills as a practitioner.  This has provided me with an opportunity to work with clients who have difficulty functioning with Autism, ODD and ADHD.  I several years experience in using ABA, and a range of psychological techniques such as positive reinforcement to improve avoidance behaviours. I am confident in practicing Positive Behaviour Support, as it helps me understand why individuals exhibit challenging behaviours and address those difficulties that trigger the behaviours. I also look at Proactive and Reactive strategies in Positive Behaviour Support to help understand behaviours. I often use Verbal Behaviour Therapy with my clients which helps them to improve their speech and communication, it also teaches them to use language when making requests or when communicating ideas to others or when in a social situation.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

Children or Young people

Young people today may face more pressures than ever before and many go through challenging and stressful times at school, university, at home and at work.

Relationships may be challenging with peers, family and colleagues and also with oneself. Feelings of anxiety and depression may be experienced. Personal identity, confidence, self esteem and relationship issues are often at the forefront of challenges faced during this time in life. It is also a time of huge potential for personal growth, development and change.

Initially, it can be helpful to have a few sessions together to get a sense of the main issues which have brought you to consider therapy. We can then think about what might help best and work through different issues so that you can start to feel and manage better.

Adults

Addressing personal issues and challenges can help increase your well-being and allow deeper personal growth. You may be feeling anxious, depressed, or have experienced a difficult childhood with trauma or abuse which may be still affecting you and your relationships.

During therapy I aim to support my clients to help them make meaning of their life, behaviours, relationships and past experiences by working together and exploring the challenges that are being faced.

The thought of counselling can be daunting which is why I offer a free consultation over the phone to answer any questions and help reduce the anxiety.

Key details

Wheelchair user access
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

I offer online video sessions and telephone sessions.
