About me

Thank you for considering my services. I understand you may be reading this because you're currently facing a challenging time or perhaps dealing with an ongoing difficulty. Whatever your situation may be, I welcome you.

Each person who seeks my help brings their unique experiences and concerns. As we work together, we will develop a working relationship that recognises your qualities and responds to your present needs.

I'm an experienced counsellor, working with individuals from diverse ethnic, racial, sexual, and gender identities, and different social and cultural backgrounds and faiths.

My expertise lies in working with Adult Individuals and Couples both in-person and online.

I offer a caring space where you can explore all your feelings. I respond to your specific needs:

  • Relationship issues/couples therapy - communication breakdowns, trust issues, intimacy, women's issues and conflict resolution. I offer individuals and couples counselling in areas of conflict resolution, relationship problems, trust issues, affairs (online and real), self-esteem, intimacy, confidence building, depression, stress, second families, and coping with decisions around separation and divorce. I also support sex-related issues, sexual identity, sexuality, relationship concerns and women's issues. I tailor my approach to each client's unique needs, drawing from evidence-based therapeutic techniques like CBT, TA, and Mindfulness.  I help my clients gain insight into their relationship dynamics and develop practical skills to foster intimacy, resolve conflicts, and rebuild trust. • Stress, anxiety, and depression - can manifest in various ways, such as mood swings, hyperactivity, difficulty concentrating, a critical inner voice, anger, rage, difficulty expressing emotions, panic episodes, insomnia, low energy, depression, or dissatisfaction.
  •  Life or work imbalance - this can lead to friction in personal relationships or employment, burnout, feelings of unfulfillment, isolation or hopelessness.
  • Abuse, trauma, or emotional neglect -  these might include experiences of being excluded or subjected to coercive, traumatic or abusive behaviour (including a history of sexual abuse)  and can exhibit symptoms of PTSD, social anxiety, low self-worth, or chronic health conditions. I utilise Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to facilitate the healing process. For more information on EMDR, visit my website: https://marzenapenfold.com/emdr/
  • Addictive or habitual behaviours - these can manifest as self-harm or neglect, intrusive thoughts, and negative patterns relating to food, drink, and substance abuse. These might also include social behaviours or phobias.
  • Gender, identity, and relationship concerns - this includes cultural diversity and neurodiversity and matters relating to race and LGBTQ.
  • Challenges with creativity or sense of loss - these may be related to spirituality and faith, including spiritual crisis, creative block, and loss of sense of self.
  • Grief or loss - through the end of a relationship, loss of employment or illness. It might also include other changes of circumstance like parenting and or children leaving home.

We all experience stress or ongoing challenges, and I understand how overwhelming it can be when talking to a friend isn't enough. It can feel daunting to arrange an initial appointment with a counsellor, but doing so can bring a sense of relief and hope that things can be different.

I believe that being heard and seen in a non-judgmental space, where you are not so alone with your difficulties, can make a vast difference and can start to feel less overwhelming.

Meeting (either face-to-face or via Zoom, etc.) can be a good way to explore together your unhelpful patterns, the emotional or physical effects on you, and your relationships,  and how, with empathy and understanding, you can start to transform them. I implement various modalities in my work, such as:

  • Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Transactional Analysis (TA)
  • Mindfulness
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
  • EMDR
  • Psychosexual Therapy
  • Relationship Therapy.

I offer a complimentary 20 minute introductory call that you can book easily here.

I have something very distinct to offer as a counsellor with specific training in ALL of the following fields: Person-Centred, Mindfulness-Based, and with input from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), plus Art Therapy approaches. My experience and training in all of these areas help me to bring a tailor-made approach to your specific needs, with warmth and reflection in one-to-one therapy sessions.

How I work

Practising Mindfulness and Meditation has informed my life for over twenty years. That, combined with my core training in Person-Centred Counselling, infuses my work as a therapist. I offer counselling and psychotherapy to those ready to work on their problems and are looking for short-term, focused sessions to explore a specific issue on an open-ended basis.

From my experience, I understand how painful it can be to lose perspective and know how important it is to have a holistic approach to healing. That's why, depending on your preferences, we may use various techniques such as guided imagery, mindfulness, art therapy, body movement, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) or EMDR. We will work together to build a strong foundation for your understanding and growth.

I also bring a unique approach to holistic healing through EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), an NHS-recommended powerful psychotherapeutic mental health treatment technique designed to assist those grappling with anxiety, depression, stress, pressure, addictions, PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and more. EMDR’s goal is to help you heal from distressing life experiences. Check my website here to find out more.  https://marzenapenfold.com/emdr/

It’s important that we create a flexible, individual approach that meets your changing needs. I use CBT to explore thoughts and behaviours and to help you relate to your experience from a cognitive perspective. In this approach, the relationship is based on trust, non-judgment, and acceptance.

I am an experienced counsellor dedicated to addressing a diverse range of emotional and psychological concerns. I work with adults and couples, offering open-ended and short-term therapy.

I devoted my time to supporting individuals within the NHS CAMHS, Secondary Schools, and through voluntary organisations like Cruse Bereavement Support and Rape Crisis. Now, I am focused on providing continuous care through my full-time private practice.

I am a qualified counsellor with a diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and a qualification in Mindfulness-Based Approaches. I’m a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and adhere to its ethical and professional code.

I attend monthly supervision with experienced Person-Centred practitioners. I continue professional development through frequent courses, workshops, and meditation retreats that deepen my core training and expand my experience and specialities.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Don't Let Your Idea Of A Great Relationship Be Just A Dream, Let Me Help You To Make It Your Reality!!!

As a dedicated Relationship, Individual and Psychosexual Therapist, I specialise in guiding individuals through the intricate realms of individual and relationship therapy. My mission is to delve deep with you, unravel the roots of your struggles, and collaboratively discover effective solutions. Witnessing positive changes and ultimately transforming lives is not just a profession for me; it's a passion that fuels my commitment to your well-being.

Everyone, whether entwined in a relationship or not, deserves to reach their full potential for contentment and satisfaction in life. It's time to reclaim your narrative and live life on your terms.

When I first studied relationships, I was perplexed by the prevalence of difficulties in intimacy. I could not understand that if sex was supposed to be natural and easy, why so many couples and individuals had problems. Over time, I've discovered that communication gaps and a lack of self-awareness and understanding often strain relationships to breaking point. It's all about finding that delicate balance – whether in life, relationships, or the realm of intimacy. For more details, check my website. https://marzenapenfold.com/services/

Something about me

Before training as a therapist, I had a career as a nurse and worked for many years in the City of London as a scientist. I’ve worked in corporate, private and voluntary organisations. My other experiences include being a mother, wife, yoga teacher, mentor, life coach and psychotherapist. And yes, I understand what it’s like to feel under pressure or be pulled in different directions. All of the above experiences provided me with beneficial lessons.

My journey of self-exploration grew from a sense of discontent with how I was responding to my life – a recognition that I was unhappy. Inspired by the patience and kindness of therapists, meditation and yoga teachers who helped me through my emotional pain, I decided to pursue a career in psychotherapy.

I have taught mindfulness, yoga, and meditation and have practised them for over twenty years. Nature and creativity are essential parts of my life. I spend my free time in forests and mountains.
