About me

About:

My name is Maria de Ridder and I run my private practice called Kintsugi Psychotherapy, across the areas of Chorlton and Didsbury areas of Manchester.  I have a deep passion for supporting individuals on their journey towards mental well-being and personal growth. It is a great privilege to do this work, and as such I aim to offer a safe space which honours the uniqueness of each client.

I have led an interesting and varied life, and bring a wealth of experience in many areas of life to my practice.

Approach:
I believe in a collaborative and client-centered approach to therapy. Each individual is treated with respect, empathy, and understanding, creating a safe and non-judgmental space for exploration and healing. Drawing from a range of therapeutic modalities, including transactional Analysis, attachment-based therapy, mindfulness-based techniques, and psychodynamic approaches, I tailor treatment plans to address your specific concerns and goals.

I am LGBTQIA+ affirming.

Transactional Analysis (TA) Overview:
Transactional Analysis is a powerful therapeutic approach that explores how individuals communicate and relate to themselves and others. Developed by psychiatrist Eric Berne, TA examines the different ego states - Parent, Adult, and Child - and how interactions between these states impact behavior and relationships. Through TA, clients gain insight into their patterns of communication, develop healthier ways of relating, and achieve greater autonomy and emotional well-being.

Script Analysis:
One of the key concepts in Transactional Analysis is the notion of "script." A script refers to the unconscious life plan or narrative that individuals develop early in life, often influenced by their early experiences and interactions with caregivers. These scripts shape how individuals perceive themselves, others, and the world around them, influencing their beliefs, behaviors, and choices.

By exploring and understanding their scripts, clients can gain valuable insight into recurring patterns and themes in their lives. Through script analysis, clients can identify self-limiting beliefs, maladaptive patterns of behaviour, and unresolved conflicts that may be holding them back from reaching their full potential.

How Script Analysis Helps Clients:

  • Awareness and Insight: Script analysis helps clients become aware of the unconscious beliefs and patterns that drive their behaviour, providing insight into why they may feel stuck or unsatisfied in certain areas of their lives.
  • Empowerment: By uncovering and challenging their scripts, clients can reclaim agency over their lives and make conscious choices that align with their values and goals.
  • Healing and Transformation: Script analysis allows clients to rewrite their life narratives, letting go of outdated scripts that no longer serve them and embracing new, empowering narratives that support growth and well-being.
  • Improved Relationships: Understanding their own scripts can also enhance clients' understanding of others, leading to more authentic and fulfilling relationships based on mutual respect and empathy.

Through the therapeutic process of Transactional Analysis, clients can embark on a journey of self-discovery, growth, and transformation, ultimately creating a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

Ready to Break Free from your life 'Script'?

Are you aware of what might be holding you back in life? My aim is to empower clients to recognise their 'script', and rewrite it; to 'put a new show on the road'. If you're yearning for change and are open to experiencing the power of therapy to guide you, don't hesitate to reach out to me today.

    Couples Therapy
For work with couples I offer two approaches, firstly a non structured approach where we discuss and work through issues in the present. I may also make observations which link back to the past (such as script, see above) and how that plays out in your relationship. I also offer a more structured approach called Imago therapy. Imago therapy is a type of relationship therapy that aims to help couples and individuals heal from past experiences and improve their relationships. It's based on the idea that childhood experiences with emotions can affect adult relationships. In this approach, you will be asked between sessions to work on exercises together and separately to help understand more about your relationship dynamics. For more information, see this blog:

  • Tailored Sessions for Your Lifestyle.

I offer flexibility with session options. I can do both in person sessions or, if more convenient, online.

Training, qualifications & experience

A psychotherapist with four years of experience in the field and over 1300 client hours, I am educated to MA level in Transactional Analysis from an Integrative Perspective. In my work, I combine academic knowledge with practical expertise to provide effective therapeutic interventions.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
