About me
Whether you are facing great difficulty or challenges in your life, seeking a new direction or simply wanting to take stock of your current situation, I believe counselling can offer valuable support and an opportunity to find a way through whatever it is you are facing, whether it be acceptance, understanding, clarification or alternative ways to perceive, experience or respond. I have over 30 years experience as a counsellor/psychotherapist working with individuals and couples, and in all this time, I have been deeply touched by the courage that my clients bring to this process.
I live and work in a quiet valley in West Wales, where the land is managed with wildlife in mind. Here there is a dedicated consulting room with a separate entrance, ensuring both privacy and freedom from disturbance or interruption. I provide a confidential face-to-face, online or telephone service and am able to work on a short-term, time-limited or long-term/open-ended basis as you feel is appropriate to your needs as well as your purse. Often the first step into this process can be the hardest and I hope that you will feel encouraged to do that, to reach out. If you feel it would be helpful, we can talk initially on the telephone and then arrange to meet for an exploratory session in order to “test the waters”.
Training, qualifications & experience
I qualified with a Post-graduate Diploma in Counselling & Human Relations from Exeter University in 1991. I have completed further trainings in Family Therapy, Family Systems Therapy (Family Constellations), Asperger Syndrome, Ecotherapy, Mindfulness and Somatic Trauma Therapy, and have a Certificate in Creative Writing with Aberystwyth University. I have a Certificate in Supervision from the London Gestalt Centre.
Most recently I have achieved certification as a Polyvagal Informed Therapist and as an IFS (Internal Family System) Therapist Level 1.
At present I work in private practice and as an associate counsellor with a national employee assistance organisation and other organisations offering short-term counselling services. I have had experience of working in the voluntary sector, further education and with the Health Service, where I worked as a counsellor with parents of children referred to a Child Psychology Service, and as a counsellor and trainer in interpersonal skills and stress management for an NHS Staff Well-being Service. I have also had considerable experience as a tutor and trainer in counselling skills and counselling for colleges in both Cornwall and Wales.
Member organisations
school Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
