About me

Life can be a struggle sometimes for many people, and for a wide variety of reasons. Sometimes we can overcome the problems that beset us with the help of family and friends whilst at other times we may need that bit of extra help. For others, perhaps, family and friends may be in short supply or they are not the right people to talk to about our deepest thoughts as we may fear their judgements or worry about how our worries will impact on them.

This is when counselling can really help. I can offer you a safe, confidential space and a non-judgemental way of being in which you can explore whatever is making your life difficult. There is something potentially very healing and liberating in finding a steady and consistent therapeutic space where you can be fully met and understood by another who has no investment in any other area of your life. My task is to walk alongside you in your pain, confusion, and distress with whatever you choose to share in the counselling space.

Counselling can help you overcome many difficult life problems - from coping with traumatic experiences and events, to dealing with depression and anxiety or managing harmful emotions and behaviours which are impacting negatively on your life and relationships.

I favour the Humanistic field of Counselling, in particular Person-Centred and Existentialism, however my work is also informed by the Psychodynamic school of counselling, more specifically Attachment Theory which helps us understand how patterns of relating which are shaped and formed in childhood can be repeated in our adult relationships. I’m also a great believer in Psycho Education and its great usefulness in helping people understand how trauma affects the brain and how they can use this knowledge to create new neural pathways and new ways of being that fit with healthy relating and being, in the world.

My aim in therapy is to create the conditions that will establish and sustain a healthy respectful healing relationship that will be at the heart of the work that we do together.

Training, qualifications & experience

  • I am a fully qualified counsellor and registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and work within their Ethical Framework. This means that you can both expect and, be guaranteed of the highest standards in our work together.
  • CPCAB Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling
  • Essential Skills Diploma in working with Children and Young People
  • Qualified CRM practitioner
  • 2 years training in The Neurobiological Legacy of Trauma
  • COSCA trained Clinical Supervisor
  • 10 Years experience of working in local charities.

Post-qualification,I have undertaken extensive Continued Professional Development in the field of trauma and this has become my special interest, in particular Post Traumatic Stress Symptoms. I have worked with many clients, supporting and helping them to both overcome and learn to manage distressing states of being which had made their lives feel quite intolerable. Safety and Stabilisation are key components in my work and they will provide the scaffolding for our work together.

I am also trained in the Comprehensive Resource Model which is a trauma informed model that seeks to resource clients anxious and fearful states at a deep level.

My Continued Professional Development post-qualification has included topics such as suicide and self-harm, anxiety management, complex trauma, dissociation and young people, childhood sexual abuse, rape and sexual assault, domestic abuse, grief, loss and isolation to name some.

I am also a Cosca trained Supervisor and supervise other counsellors working in the voluntary sector as well as being a Workplace Supervisor in a residential care setting. I draw on Person-Centred concepts to inform my Supervision work which means supervision that is tailored to my supervisees’ needs.

I have helped develop and deliver Trauma Training Workshops to workers in other voluntary and statutory organisations as well as delivering Trainings on Rape and Sexual Assault and Childhood Sexual Abuse to partner organisations and schools and University.

I have worked in the voluntary sector for the past 10 years, supporting survivors of rape and sexual assault and childhood sexual abuse. I have worked with both male and female adults, older adults and for the last three years I have worked predominantly with young people from age 12-25 in school and community settings.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
