About me

When accessing counselling it may feel difficult as it can be a daunting experience due to possible fear around how we may be judged. You may feel some sort of pressure or expectation to open up about all sorts of things to someone who is essentially a stranger. Feeling a bit anxious about it is totally understandable. However, what I would like you to know is that I work in a person centred way which means I follow what you choose to bring to the counselling sessions. I strongly believe that it isn’t about what is wrong with you but rather what has happened to you and I am here to listen to your story.
I qualified in 2017 with a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. I also graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2002 and if clients are struggling to talk about certain things, if they choose to, I may use other creative tools such as drawing, painting and sand tray. My approach to counselling is to allow a client to express themselves in whatever way they choose, whether it be through words or creatively.

Training, qualifications & experience

Humanistic Existential Counselling - Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (Guildford College, Surrey)

Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (University of Sunderland)

Accreditation with BACP

I follow the BACP ethical framework and value the importance of continued professional development (CPD).

Experience

Brixham college - I currently work part-time supporting children and young people as a school counsellor. The support I have given here involves - social anxiety, self-harm, low self-confidence, attachment difficulties and working with individuals on the Autism Spectrum.

Mind - I worked as a Counsellor supporting and empowering clients living with mental health difficulties. It was here I grew to understand the complexities of our mental health. Some may describe or label them as depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and many more.

PARCS (Portsmouth, Abuse and Rape Counselling Service) - Supporting clients who have been sexually violated at any time in their lives. I learnt about power imbalance in relationships and post-traumatic stress which involved understanding the science behind the function of the brain.

Rowcroft - I worked as a bereavement counsellor and it is here I grew to understand the challenges around loss and grief.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
