About me

It can be daunting searching for a therapist but you have already taken the first step, so congratulations!  My name is Amy (she/her) and I am an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist, with experience seeing clients at Mind BLMK and Herts Mind Network.  I am a warm, empathic person and I offer you a confidential space where you can be heard without judgement.

I offer sessions online over Zoom or in person from a quiet, private room in Southdown Clinic in Harpenden.  I aim to create a therapeutic process that is helpful to you as an individual.  For this reason, I do not apply one particular model but instead I draw on several modalities to explore what works for you.

I am trained in a range of approaches including psychodynamic, person-centred, humanistic, CBT, transactional analysis, Gestalt, solution-focussed and existential amongst others.   We can discuss how you would like to work, so that I can tailor the sessions to your preferences.  If you are unsure what you want or you are new to counselling, that’s ok too!  I will listen attentively and we will find our way together.  The sessions are collaborative and I ask for regular feedback to ensure they are as helpful and effective as possible.

As a therapist, I have had my own therapy, which has given me a deeper understanding of myself and how I interact with others.  It has also left me with a sense of how vulnerable it can feel sitting in the client’s chair.  For this reason, I always try to make the dynamic between us as equal as possible.

I work with people from all backgrounds and I aim to offer a safe space to clients who may feel excluded, exploited or sidelined by society.

At the heart of what I do is a respect for the autonomy of each individual client: you make your own choices and you are the expert in your own life. I am not here to give advice or provide solutions but I will listen to you and I will collaborate with you to find a way forward.

Whatever you are going through, this way of working can lead to a process of self-discovery, greater self-worth, improved self-esteem and an ability to make new, meaningful choices in life.

Training, qualifications & experience

Please ask if you would like to see my qualifications and I will be very happy to show them to you.  I have an MA and a Postgraduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy from the University of East London.  I passed both courses with distinction.  Before that I also gained a Foundation Certificate in Psychodynamic Counselling from the Counselling Foundation.  Before re-training as a counsellor and psychotherapist, my background was in music and literature and I gained a 2.1 in English from Cambridge University.

I have experience working with clients both in private practice and at two branches of Mind: Mind BLMK and Herts Mind Network.  I have worked with people experiencing a wide range of mental health difficulties, as well as those working through life transitions such as ageing, parenthood, retirement, divorce and new diagnoses.  It has been a privilege to work with all my clients and I continue to learn from them.

I have always endeavoured to be open and welcoming to people from all walks of life.  It is important to me to continue to challenge any unconscious prejudices I may have assimilated by being a white British female with the privileges that entails.  I try to ensure that my practice is welcoming to people of all religions, races, genders, sexualities, financial and class backgrounds and those who are affected by mental or physical health difficulties.  If any of my clients feel that I am not achieving this goal then I would wish to know that, so that I can make changes and improve the service that I offer.

I am a registered member of the BACP (member number: 384637), which means that I am accountable for working in line with the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions.  It also means that I am required to have regular supervision of my practice by another experienced psychotherapist and that I engage regularly in professional development activities.  All of this ensures that I am working safely, ethically and thoughtfully with my clients.

I take the protection of my clients’ private data seriously, which is why I have a clear privacy policy.  I am also registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and my register number is ZB313323.  I endeavour to be reliable, honest and trustworthy and to clearly communicate with each of my clients so that everyone knows where they stand.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Key details

I hope to offer a more accessible therapeutic space in future, but sadly the room I work in at the moment is up two flights of stairs. If this affects you, please call to discuss how I may still be able to help, for example with online sessions on Zoom.
