About me

Hello, I'm Sophie - a warm welcome to my page. I don't know what has brought you hear today, but I hope I can help. Maybe you are feeling overwhelmed with the intensity of your emotions and are struggling to cope? Maybe you are feeling stuck, and need to gain understanding and clarity on situation or your way forward? Maybe you are constantly struggling with distressing thoughts or worrying about what might go wrong? Maybe you are looking to gain acceptance and move on from events in the past?

How can counselling help me?

I can provide a confidential space to take a step back from, reflect on, and explore areas of difficulty in your life. I won't give you advise, however I won't just sit there and say nothing. Instead I will offer you a space to feel really heard, seen and accepted; offer reflections and ask you questions to enable you to explore your thoughts and feelings about what is concerning you. This gives you an opportunity to gain a new understanding of your troubles and consider what you can do to move forward. I can also provide you with techniques to use to help reduce and manage difficult emotions such as anxiety, panic attacks or anger.

As a counsellor, I am impartial and trained to listen attentively and without judgement, which allows you to feel safe and supported to talk about whatever is on your mind. I will try and see things from your point of view, so that you may feel genuinely understood, but may also offer you different perspectives, and will help you notice patterns of behaviour and explore where they might have come from.

This can help you make better sense of situations whilst increasing self-esteem, self-awareness, confidence, and improving relationships.

What issues can you help me with?

My counselling experience is diverse and and includes working with people through major life transitions, relationship issues,  and people suffering with anxiety, stress or depression. I have helped people in overcoming issues such as disordered eating, low self-esteem, and the emotional trauma caused by abuse. I also volunteer with a bereavement charity, so have had extensive experience of supporting people through the loss of a loved one.

What is your style?

I am have a warm and kind style, with a focus on building a trusting, empathic and accepting relationship, so that you can feel at ease to fully explore what is troubling you.

I appreciate each individual is different in terms of them and their needs, so will work collaboratively with you to support you in the best way for you, at a pace that you are comfortable with, and review with you regularly.

Where to start?

From personal experience, I understand how opening-up to someone can feel daunting, so you’re very welcome to get in touch for a free, no obligation chat. This initial consultation can be either by phone or online and lasts up to 30 minutes. It gives us the opportunity to meet and talk through any questions that you may have, about what you are hoping to get out of counselling and for me to explain what I can offer in our sessions.

My premises

I am located in North Cornwall, in a semi rural location away from the main towns and residential areas of Cornwall, giving you an extra level of discretion and privacy, however there are no buses so you will need a car to access. There is off road parking.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
