About me

Hi, I’m Lorraine.

Let me tell you a little about myself, to help you decide if I may be the right fit for you.

Having experienced being in the client chair myself, I know how important it is to find someone you can relate with and to feel comfortable with. You are probably feeling very full emotionally and want to feel able to open up and tell your Counsellor all that you have been holding and for that it is important to be in a caring, supportive, non-judgmental space with your Counsellor. I hope the information below will help you in your search for who might feel right for you.

I have always enjoyed working with people, having worked in the social care sector for quite some years. I trained as a Social Worker, gaining a Diploma in Social Work in 2001. Working in social care gave me an understanding of the huge obstacles facing people in their day to day lives and the impact this has on people’s well-being, both physically and mentally. It also helped me appreciate the impact our environment has on us, not only day to day but just as importantly during our past. It is our environment and experiences growing up that sets the foundation for our beliefs about ourselves and the world around us, which then impacts on how we function and relate within it.

Having experienced the huge benefits of counselling myself, I decided to train as a Counsellor in order to support others to gain this understanding.

Counselling training gave me the opportunity to reflect on my own experiences growing up and, as I did, I gained an increasing understanding of the huge impact my own childhood had on my way of functioning in the now. Relationships with our caregivers, past traumas, and losses amongst many other experiences too numerous to name here, can often leave their mark on us, impacting our lives subconsciously as we struggle to make our way through the ups and downs of life.

I have found that if we are given the opportunity of feeling safe, held and supported, and that we are ok even with all our complexities, we can bear to visit painful places and in doing so gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and find our way through the confusion of our feelings and what we are experiencing. Speaking to a Counsellor can enable you to feel less alone in your struggle as we explore together what is going on for you. The work we do together can feel very healing and it often empowers us by offering us the chance to live life more consciously and authentically into the future, enabling us to make more conscious choices about how we work with the challenges we face and how we live our lives day to day, helping us to create the changes in our lives that we are often seeking.

Training, qualifications & experience

I trained as a Person-Centred Integrative Counsellor. To simplify, it is about you, the client. I use a humanistic approach, which means I work to understand your experiences from your perspective and offer you a safe, positive and relational experience, which is open and genuine. In this space, I hope to help you to explore issues and facilitate personal growth. Integrative therapy means that I have knowledge of different therapy theories. Everyone is an individual, so one size does not fit all and I may utilise a variety of counselling theories to help you to explore and cope with issues and challenges in your life.

My counselling training included working within organisational settings, working within a local authority setting.

I have also undertaken training in bereavement.

I am an Accredited Member of BACP (British Association For Counselling and Psychotherapy) being bound by their ethical framework for good practice.

Since qualifying as a Counsellor in 2007, I have gained wide ranging experience of working with a variety of issues. I have extensive experience of supporting people with life limiting illness, bereavement, traumatic bereavement through suicide and stress in the workplace.

During my time in counselling, I have supported clients with a wide variety of issues, terminal illness, traumatic bereavement, anxiety, depression, physical, emotional and sexual abuse, rape, anger issues, depression, major life changes, PTSD and relationship issues. I have had the privilege of meeting and supporting a wide variety of clients, different age groups and from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
