About me

My name is Cathy Butterworth, I am an Integrative Psychotherapist & Counsellor. I offer both in-person and online sessions. My private practices are based in Shoreditch, London and Woodford, Essex.

I know choosing a therapist can be difficult especially when you have symptoms and issues to deal with. Whether it is your first time in therapy, or you are revisiting, understanding the therapist’s approach can be helpful. I want you to have confidence in me and our working relationship to discover the changes you want to make to support your general well-being.

My therapeutic approach is guided by the type of client’s needs at a pace the client feels comfortable with. I provide a confidential and non-judgemental space where through talking, individuals can explore and understand their lived experiences.

The therapeutic relationship is fundamental to therapy and will be key to stimulating change for the individual. I work closely with clients to explore their relationship with their world and how they orientate themselves within life, supporting them to navigate change. My work is grounded in existential and relational psychotherapy.

Clients will have an opportunity to explore not only their past but also the here and now and how this impacts their day-to-day lives.

So much of the trauma and experiences that shape us are expressed in physical expression within us. Although my practice is predominantly talking therapy, I encourage clients to explore their bodily experiences and how they may be carrying their anxieties, stresses and emotions with the view to releasing some of this tension through the therapeutic work.

My aim is to support individuals to explore their possibilities and choices to enable them to be agents of change in their own lives and to feel empowered by that change.

I am available to work with clients both face-to-face or via Zoom video consultations.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a MA in Integrative Psychotherapy & Counselling (Existential) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychotherapy & Counselling. I am a registered member of the BACP.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
