About me

A Big Welcome

Hello I'm Susan an experienced Counsellor and Psychotherapist in Aspley in Nottingham near to the City Centre.  Welcome to my webpage.  Thank you for stopping by in your search for a suitable Counsellor or Psychotherapist.

Confidentiality And Appreciating You As An Individual

I appreciate that it can take courage to seek therapeutic support.  I have tried to put myself 'in your shoes' in order to make you taking this step that little bit easier.  For me being treated with respect is important.  What follows from my being respectful towards you is being interested in you, listening to you and hearing you, and appreciating you as an individual.  It also means a confidential service, and me being available to answer any queries you have at the outset and along the way too, to  put your mind at ease.  I will be happy to answer any questions you may have by telephone, text or email - whatever suits you the best.

Client Centred Practice

You are my focus.  I offer a client-centred practice with empathy and caring.  I recognise the client/therapist relationship as instrumental to gaining insight, managing challenges, and coping with changes, and to dealing with pain.  I work in a collaborative way staying with you and supporting you along the way.  I believe in transparency and in not giving false promises.  Therapy can be hard work at times, but this can be balanced with the benefit it can bring.  I will be there for you.

Reasons for Counselling and Psychotherapy

Therapy can be used to deal with a wide range of personal issues, life challenges, and for coping with change.  The multitude of reasons for entering therapy will be as many and varied as the individuals I have been seeing over the past several decades. Anything that has an impact on you, your emotional health, and your ability to enjoy your life, no matter how small or how large can be a reason to enter into therapy.

People also use therapy to 'stretch themselves' - for personal development reasons, perhaps to gain in confidence and insight, or to maximize their grow in one or more areas of their life, eg. by looking at their career.

There can be times when things seem far from clear.  Perhaps someone doesn't 'feel themself' or they may not feel quite right, or maybe think they cannot 'see the wood for the trees'.  Things don't have to be certain at the outset of therapy, which can be a safe environment for someone to explore their feelings and ideas and gain insight.

Initial Free Consultation

I offer a complimentary, no obligation intial consultation for you so that you can see how you would feel about working with me.  It is a chance to go through what issue or issues you would want to bring and to clarify any queries you might have.  I usually offer around 30 minutes by phone for this.

One-to-One and Couples Counselling

I am able to offer Counselling and Psychotherapy to individuals or to couples.

Methods By Which I Offer Counselling And Psychotherapy

I am able to offer Counselling and Psychotherapy to individuals and to couples in a variety of ways.  It is about what you feel would work best for you.  I have sessions with clients on an in-person face-to-face basis, or by telephone - either audio or video call, or via Zoom.  I am happy to discuss with you how you would like to proceed.

Training, qualifications & experience

My Qualifications

All my Counselling and Psychotherapy training has been with Nottingham University from introductory course through to Masters.  In reverse order my qualifications are as follows: Masters Degree (MA),  Honours Degree (BA Hons) Ist Class, Diploma (Dip) with Distinction, Higher Certificate with Distinction, and Introductory Course.

My Working Background

I have breadth and depth of experience working in a number of settings and with different types of work in a Senior Counsellor and Psychotherapist role and /or managing other Counsellors and Psychotherapists.  I have, for example, worked in the fields of mental health, with individuals experiencing bullying, and with sexual abuse and trauma.  I have also the benefit of having worked with the entire spectrum of age groups: with older adults, adults, children and young people, children.  I am able to draw on all my wealth of experiences beneficially now in my private practice.

Issues I Frequently Deal With

I often am dealing with: depression (both clinical and reactive), anxiety, anger issues, self-esteem and confidence.  Relationships is another important area whether it is the quality and meaning of a relationship or relationships,  or whether it is dealing with the ending of one or more relationships (ie in the case of family rifts or estrangement.  I also do a lot of working with grief and losses of all kinds - human or pet.  And I deal with abuses of all kinds: emotional, psychological, coercive control, physical and sexual.

My webpage also includes a comprehensive, although not an exhaustive list of subject matter.

Experience of Different Ways of Delivery

I have experience and training not only in working face-to-face, but also by telephone, and running a telephone helpline.  My experience of working online also includes crisis work.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
