About me
I am in process of reviewing my practice and I am not currently taking new referrals for therapy. Please feel free to contact me for clinical supervision and organisational consultancy and coaching
I have over 30 years experience of counselling and psychotherapy in addition to statutory child mental health and social work experience. I offer a service to adults who are feeling stuck in repeated patterns of behaviour and relationships, who might have insight and awareness but struggle to make the changes in their life they are seeking. My office spaces are quiet and peaceful and both venues NE6 and NE17 provide valuable space to think. I have some availability to work with people in the outdoors, walking and talking therapy in the tranquil environment of the Derwent Valley, The land of Oak and Iron and home to the soaring Red Kite birds. I also have a retreat like setting office space at the bottom of the my garden. Parking is free and also hassle free in both places. I usually work with my dog in the room, a gently attuned whippet who provides a reassuring presence, please let me know if you would prefer for her not to be in the room.
I believe that therapy is not just a set of theories and techniques that get stuck together through training, it is a skilful weaving of knowledge, experience and flexibility. Many people carry a strong sense of emptiness in their life, of lacking purpose and passion, not quite understanding where that originates from or what to do about it. Psychotherapy is a place to explore this and really begin to change the way you live life, to grow your potential and live the life you have dreamed of; to become more authentic and find your true self. Perhaps you are not sure what you dream of and need some space to dream and recognise or develop your strengths. You may be in transition and not sure what the next step is, whether transition is of your own making or something that has been imposed through health, work, retirement or relationship change, becoming a parent, leaving home for university or the opposite of empty nest feelings or loss of role or responsibility. You may have experienced a bereavement of a long term partner or significant person. All of these can take some adjusting to. you might be on the edge of transition and holding yourself back from making changes in your life because of fear, often of the unknown. You may be needing support to step into or accept "this next chunk of your life".
Every individual has their own unique story, therapy can help in finding different ways of managing your struggles in life and making sense of the difficulties you are experiencing right now and make connections to how your life history comes into the present. I have had a lot of success in helping to people make changes in their lives and move forwards on issues where previously you may have felt stuck. You might notice patterns emerging and a feeling of "I've been here before and I really want to do it differently this time/next time".
I work with issues such as separaration and divorce, depression and anxiety, child abuse, stress and complex grief and bereavemet and fertility related issues and adoption. You may be trying to save you relationship following and an affair, or feeling at a loss and trying to make sense of your world maybe at work or in your personal life. . I offer counselling and psychotherapy and work short and long term using approaches ranging from solution focused CBT approaches to long term in depth therapy.
I have extensive experience of Counselling and Psychotherapy with children and adults and have worked with a wide range of people with varying difficulties from a diverse range of social and cultural backgrounds.
I provide supervision to adult and child therapists and counsellors from a range of modalities who are seeking to maintain their accreditation with UKCP. BACP or HPC or to those still students and or building their clinical hours. I also provide a mentoring/ consultation service to senior managers and mental health practitioners in organisations who need a confidential space to think and similary to practitioners in related fields and to organisations struggling with change.

school Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.
As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.
UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
Areas of counselling I deal with
Other areas of counselling I deal with
I work in private practice in the north east offering a counselling and psychotherapy service to those in Tyne and Wear and the localities of Newcastle Upon Tyne. I work individually with adults. Adoption, step families and foster families present their own difficulties and need someone with specific skills to do provide this approach and counselling service.
Some people prefer to attend short term and work on presenting issues whilst others may want to work on experiences from the past the continue to haunt them in the present.
Feeling safe and building a relationship in which the unspeakable can be explored is my strength as a counsellor and psychotherapist. This allows an opportunity to develop new strategies to cope with old difficulties of low self esteem, anxiety depression.
