About me

I am a Psychotherapist specialising in individual and couples therapy. I have a wealth of experience gained through working in the mental health field for nearly 2 decades, practising as a psychotherapist for many years.  I work on a time limited, or open ended basis depending on the nature of your difficulties, and needs.

I help people who are experiencing a range of issues such as loss, relationship problems, low mood, anxiety, stress, low self esteem, anger, and at times not finding purpose in life. My main approach  in individual work is psychodynamic, which addresses the person as a whole, helping us make sense of how early life experiences may be related to your current  difficulties- repetitive negative patterns, troubling thoughts, overwhelming emotions, and unhealthy ways of relating to yourself, and others. As an analytic approach, psychodynamic psychotherapy gives you insight into the source of your difficulties, therefore allowing you to develop the agency to make necessary changes. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a deeper way of working which enables you to safely process emotions that may have been experienced as unbearable. The relationship between us is central to the therapeutic process.

The other approach  which I use is CBT, which helps you with addressing present day difficulties. CBT helps you gain some skills and techniques to deal with any negative behaviours, feelings, and thought patterns. CBT is a very short term way of working-6-12 sessions. Depending on your needs, I may work integratively or have a few CBT sessions, to give you some grounding, before moving onto psychodynamic work. The approach will be agreed in the consultation where we explore your difficulties.

I also work with couples of any gender,  sexual orientation,  or coupledom who may be experiencing relationship difficulties, and seeking professional help to navigate them.  Please refer to the Couple's Therapy web page on my website for more about my therapeutic approach to couples work.

I have had the privilege of helping people who are experiencing a wide range of issues in the capacity of a psychotherapist.  My belief and confidence in the therapeutic effects of psychotherapy has been reinforced by seeing the transformation and changes therapy enables in people's lives, due to the clarity it brings, and the enhanced emotional maturity it creates. I have also seen many people I have worked with leave therapy feeling more wholesome, and starting to live their lives more meaningfully.

Apart from practicing as a psychotherapist, I am a lecturer on the Msc in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy Course (Adult) at Birkbeck University of London.

I run Relationship Enrichment Workshops specifically on Communication and Conflict Resolution. Please visit my website at www.citysanctuarytherapy.com for further information.

I provide supervision to trainee and qualified psychodynamic psychotherapists. Due to my current teaching role at Birkbeck University, l cannot supervise  students who are currently enrolled on the Birkbeck course. I can only work with them after completing the course.

Supervision is individual, and either bi -weekly or monthly, depending on the duration.

I am recognised by Axa, WPA, Cigna, Aviva, & Vitality, as a Healthcare Provider.

How I can help you

My approach is fundamentally based on tailoring the therapy to suit my client's needs, with the relationship created between us acting as an anchor and a vehicle. I am able to use CBT and psychodynamic counselling and psychotherapy modalities, which is enriching to my practice. The choice between CBT or psychodynamic psychotherapy is determined by how you are currently living your day to day life and the nature of your difficulties. During the initial consultation meeting, where we explore what brings you to therapy, the choice of the modality and length of work can be jointly agreed upon. The recommendations  for therapy modality and length are judiciously made, putting your interests and well being above everything.

For more about the difference between CBT and psychodynamic approaches, please visit my website. I also offer one off consultative sessions, to people who are unable to commit to more than one session and in need of a safe space to share their current difficulties with someone who is non judgmental, listening, and containing.
