About me

Hello, my name is John and I'm Psychotherapist and Counsellor.

How to choose?

I'd encourage you to get in touch with me and other therapists to get a feel about whether we're a good fit. I offer free and confidential discovery calls so do get in touch.

How do I work?

I offer weekly appointments to clients, generally meeting at the same time each week for 50 minutes. These sessions can be online, or face to face if you live in Brighton and Hove. Some clients also like a hybrid of face to face and online as it allows some scope for flexibility. In most cases I work in an open-ended way – which means we finish working together when you feel ready.

What can I help with?

I have expertise working with addiction, trauma and depression. I also have experience working with issues such as anxiety, relationship breakdowns and work stress (amongst others). However that said I like to see the whole person, rather than simply seeing an issue! Often these things link together, and part of the therapy process is understanding the connections between the various aspects of our life.

Counselling or Psychotherapy?

I offer counselling - this offers a space to address issues that might be of immediate concern and that are causing distress. I also offer more longer term psychotherapy allowing you to explore experiences from your past, look at unconscious ways of being and examine how you relate to the world. In reality there is much overlap between the two, and the approach we take will be directed by your needs as the client; often this will change as the sessions unfold.

My Style

I’m not the type of therapist that will act like a blank canvas or sit silently nodding. I will share my thoughts and feelings with you in an empathetic, compassionate and sometimes challenging way. I hope that we will have a rich and meaningful relationship where you feel listened to and valued – this will create an environment where you can either address some of the difficulties you’re experiencing or perhaps even embark on a journey of personal exploration and growth.

The relationship

I take inspiration from the psychotherapists Carl Rogers and Irvin Yalom, meaning that I believe the most important aspect of any therapeutic intervention is the relationship between the therapist and the client. It’s important when choosing a therapist to feel comfortable with them, as this will allow you to feel that you can be open. An initial exploratory call can help with this, and I'd encourage you to make contact with me and other therapists to find someone who is the right.

Training, qualifications & experience

My qualifications

I'm a qualified therapist with a Post Graduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Coaching from the University of East London. I'm a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP). I work in private practice as a psychotherapist, counsellor and coach (face to face, and online), and part time as a therapist with the Rock Clinic in Brighton.

My experience

I have over 20 years experience of supporting people to transform their lives and fulfil their potential. I've previously worked in health and social care supporting people with multiple and complex needs such as mental health difficulties, substance misuse issues, homelessness and abuse survivors. For many years I was a manager of a residential drug and alcohol rehab that supported ex-homeless clients recover from addiction  - this taught me an invaluable lesson in believing in a persons capacity to change, and established my understanding of diverse range of a therapeutic interventions.

The approach I take

My approach to therapy is integrative, which means I may use a number of different psychotherapeutic methods. I’ve been trained in the following approaches; person-centred, psychodynamic, transactional analysis, existential, gestalt, cognitive behavioural therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy.

In essence this means I can adapt my approach based on the needs that you have as a client, and be responsive to the issues that you might bring. I have also learned from the experiences of the clients with whom I work, integrating their collective wisdom into my practice.

Coaching

I also offer therapeutic coaching to professionals and leaders to help them explore how their personal experiences impact their work performance. My approach combines my training in therapy and my own experiences of senior leadership in the charity sector. However, coaching is not therapy, and is instead dynamic and change focused. The purpose of looking at yourself in more depth prior to taking action is to establish meaningful goals that align with your values and your aspirations – by doing this we aim to help you make changes that last.

If you think coaching might be for you, do get in touch

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
