About me
Hello, my name is John, and I'm a therapist and Coach, working online via Zoom.
My approach
Therapy with me is typically open-ended. We continue working together for as long as it feels helpful and supportive, and you are free to end at a point that feels right for you.
My approach is warm, active, and engaged - I’m not a therapist who sits silently and nods! I will share my observations, reflections, and questions with honesty and care, and at times offer challenge where it may be helpful.
I am an integrative therapist, drawing on a range of approaches to support the work we do. This allows me to adapt how I work to suit your individual needs, something we can reflect on and shape together as our work develops.
Practicalities
I offer weekly 50-minute online sessions, usually at the same time each week. Regular sessions help create a sense of continuity and stability, which can support the therapeutic process. Where needed, longer or more frequent sessions can also be arranged.
What to expect
I usually encourage a brief exploratory call before arranging a first session. This gives us a chance to talk about what you’re looking for, ask any questions you may have, and see whether working together feels like a good fit.
If we decide to go ahead, the first session is an opportunity for us to begin getting to know each other. You can share as much or as little as feels comfortable, and we’ll start to explore what has brought you to therapy.
The first few sessions are often about building a trusting relationship and gaining a clearer understanding of the difficulties you’re experiencing. From there, we can begin to think together about what you would like to get from therapy and agree on a way forward that feels right for you.
Training, qualifications & experience
My qualifications
I'm a qualified therapist with a Post Graduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Coaching.
I'm a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP).
My experience
I have over 20 years experience of supporting people to transform their lives and fulfil their potential. I've previously worked in health and social care supporting people with multiple and complex needs such as mental health difficulties, substance misuse issues, homelessness, and abuse survivors.
I was a manager of a drug and alcohol rehab that supported ex-clients recover from addiction - this experience showed me that everyone has the capacity to change, and established my understanding of diverse range of therapeutic interventions.
Before working for myself as a therapist, I worked as the Director of a Social Care Charity. This organisation provides services to those with complex needs such as Substance Misuse, Trauma, Homelessness and Domestic Abuse. This work gave me valuable insight into leadership; it also strengthened my understanding of workplace stress and burnout
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
