About me

Hello, I’m Jo (she/her). Thank you for visiting my profile.

I am an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist providing online therapy across the UK, and outdoor therapy in natural spaces around Cornwall.

I work with all ages but have extensive experience supporting clients aged 16-24.

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and adhere to their ethical framework.

My practice is trauma-informed and LGBTQ+ affirming.

As Your Therapist

I offer a warm and non-judgemental space in which you can explore your thoughts and feelings. Together we will reflect on your goals for therapy and consider the best approach to suit your individual needs and preferences. I can work with you using a range of modalities, including humanistic, psychodynamic and behavioural therapies.

At the heart of my practice is the belief that you are the expert in your own life. Through our work together, we will reflect on your current situation, explore your hopes for the future and harness your unique strengths and resources to get you where you want to be.

It is important that therapy is a collaborative, dynamic and empowering process. As our work together progresses, there will be regular opportunities to review how therapy is going and to explore whether there is anything you would like to change.

Above all, my goal as your therapist is to build a safe and trusting relationship through which you can feel empowered to create positive, meaningful and sustainable change in your life.

Areas of Special Interest

I am highly experienced in providing therapeutic support to 16-24 year olds and have worked extensively with looked after children and care leavers for many years, both in residential and educational settings. This experience has allowed me to develop a comprehensive understanding of the most prominent mental health challenges affecting young people in the UK today.

Other areas of special interest include:

  • LGBTQ+ identity
  • Childhood sexual abuse
  • Donor conception

Training, qualifications & experience

Training

I hold a BACP accredited Postgraduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. In addition to this, I have received professional training in the following areas:

  • Mindfulness
  • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
  • Ecotherapy and Nature-Allied Psychotherapy
  • Motivational Interviewing

I also have extensive training in safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.

Background

Prior to qualifying as a therapist, I spent over ten years working in social care supporting children and adults. During this time I worked therapeutically with care leavers, survivors of abuse and asylum seekers. I managed a mental health recovery centre in the UK and also established an emotional health programme that is delivered annually to young people in Sri Lanka.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
