About me

Taking the first step to decide to come to therapy takes courage, the next step is finding a therapist that you feel comfortable to work with. I believe the quality of relationship created between therapist and client is key to a successful outcome. Therefore I would like to tell you a bit about me and the way I work.

I am an experienced therapist offering both Counselling and Psychotherapy in East Sussex/Kent.  I am BACP Accredited and UKATA Diploma qualified. Alongside my private practice, I work in mental health clinical practice both with individual clients as well as facilitating group work.  Additionally I am a school counsellor for a primary school based in Kent.

I have the adaptability to offer work on a short term or long term basis as well as the flexibility to work within a range of difficulties such as anxiety, depression, relationship problems and more.  My aim is to work in a way which is respectful of you and your needs as well as being able to provide you with challenge should you wish it and when you are ready for it.

Providing a confidential and safe environment promotes the building of a trusting relationship. By carefully listening to you, I am able to gain a good understanding of what you would like to achieve and then with your consent, we can work together towards establishing and realising your goals.

"Can't see the wood for the trees".

Sometimes we are not always clear about what it is we are looking for or what exactly is troubling us. Often we find ourselves stuck in the same rut, noticing ourselves repeating certain behaviours in life with the same outcomes and then left wondering, 'how did that happen again?'

Therapy is a unique space in which you can discover what makes you 'tick'. With the opportunity to explore yourself, the relationships in your life and how you interact with others, you will discover how you can release yourself from familiar and perhaps painful patterns. The therapeutic relationship serves to develop self awareness, harness self compassion and build resilience, enabling you to move forward and make choices and decisions about your life.

"The whole is greater than the sum of its parts" - Aristotle

I believe we are not simply defined by a thought, feeling or action alone - in therapy we can learn how our personality is structured. Through understanding and accepting the different aspects of ourselves we can then identify how much positive and negative energy we invest in certain areas of our lives and start to redress any imbalance so that once again we can be whole.

What Next?

I offer an initial 15 minute telephone consultation which is free of charge.  This is an opportunity for us to understand what brings you to therapy and for you to get an idea of what you can expect should you choose me to be your therapist. This time will also give you a chance to ask me any initial questions about me or the way I work and more importantly a feel for whether I might be the right fit for you.

All individual sessions last 50 minutes,  during our first session I will take some time to conduct a short assessment, this is important and allows me to safely assess that we are suitable to work together and additionally maximises the efficacy of our work together.

Training, qualifications & experience

Although my main 4 year training has been in Transactional Analysis I am able to offer plenty of adaptability. Having attended various training and worked in different modalities , I have also worked extensively in different settings and alongside others therapists and had this has allowed me the flexibility to incorporate various approaches in my work.  I use CBT, Humanistic, Integrative, Relational approaches when appropriate to suit individual need.

I am always keen to further my knowledge and enhance my practice and therefore I regularly participate in continuing professional development . I am particularly interested in the development of neuroscience and how this can helpfully inform my work.  I often use Body psychotherapy and mindfulness techniques to enhance and help my work with clients when appropriate.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

UKATA
UK Association for Transactional Analysis (UKATA)

UKATA (formally the Institute of Transactional Analysis) is the national UK Transactional Analysis organisation representing all fields of TA theory and practice. TA can be used as an effective tool in a wide range of contexts such as: personal development, management, coaching, counselling, psychotherapy, teaching, education, parenting and more.
