About me

Hello, my name is Hédi Salánki, I am a qualified, accredited counsellor. I was born in Hungary and have lived in the UK for 30 years now,  I have always lived and worked in the North East.

I offer counselling to individuals from age 13.  My main area of support is male mental and emotional health, but I also work with women and teenagers.  We can work face to face in the security of my private therapy room or via video.  To offer maximum confidentiality and security, the therapy room's address is only available to my clients, any publicised addresses are approximate. I am DBS checked to work with children and adults.

I am an integrative counsellor, which means that I combine three effective approaches to counselling according to my client's needs:

Person Centred Therapy - This enables my client to speak about any issues they wish to explore, thus releasing long ingrained pain.

Psychodynamic Counselling - This allows us to shed light on reasons and patterns hidden in the past and present, in our family and other relationships, pointing to potential roots of ongoing emotional difficulties.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) - After exploring the issues via the two other therapeutic approaches, CBT can help my clients to figure out their own solutions and make changes to help themselves.

Alongside these I also use elements of Solution Focused therapy and Inner Child therapy.

Training, qualifications & experience

In 2016 I completed a Level 5 diploma in Integrative Counselling. Within integrative counselling I combine three effective approaches to counselling: please see under General information.

I achieved accreditation with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy in 2022. Since my qualification I have supported my clients in Gateshead and surrounding areas in over 2000 client sessions.

Prior to training as a therapist I worked as a teacher of modern languages and later as a finance manager. I also worked in schools as a special needs teacher with children with autism and ADHD. Currently I have another part time job where I support Young Carers and their families, here I work closely with families with serious mental and physical health issues, also drug, alcohol or gambling issues. This practical side of my working life complements well the counselling support I offer to my private clients as it allows me to gain a lot of close insights that would be harder to access otherwise.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
