About me

Big Boys Don’t Cry...
I specialise in helping men with their mental health, particularly:

  • Understanding and managing stress and anxiety
Anxiety, panic attacks and depression can prevent us from leading a full life. Anger-management issues can damage jobs and relationships.

  • Supporting men suffering with depression
Men are three times as likely to take their own lives than women. It’s OK to not be OK - and to talk about it.

  • Developing self-awareness to heal from past trauma and frustrations
Unresolved issues such as loss, abuse or a difficult childhood (or just the way we were raised) can also push us towards coping strategies, such as alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex and other addictions.

  • Improving communication skills to navigate relationships more confidently
This is an area where we can make change. By improving self-awareness of how things affect us, how we tend to respond (and sometimes where that came from), we can become more successful in relationships. We can share our feelings and communicate our needs more effectively.

Some men are accused of being controlling and narcissistic but may actually benefit from developing their own self-esteem and finding better ways to get their needs met - or dealing with not getting them met.

Not having to be perfect with others can bring much freedom and growth; being imperfect can show a strength that builds trust in relationships. It takes balls to be vulnerable!

I work with both men and women on these issues but particularly help men to feel safe enough to be vulnerable and open.

Often we can’t change our circumstances, and we can’t change the past, but we can change how things affect us.

Getting Started
It can be hard to get started to find help but you’ve made it this far!
Send me a message through here, or my website, to arrange either:

  • Free 15-20 minute phone call or Teams chat
  • A paid initial session to give you the time and space to explore what you’re looking for and if we’re a good fit for each other.

Please check your spam folder if you haven’t received a response within a couple of days.

Training, qualifications & experience

  • Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy (Distinction) - Leeds Beckett University
  • Post Graduate Certificate in Counselling and Interpersonal Skills - Leeds Beckett University.
  • Level 2 Qualification in Understanding Autism

In terms of theory, I have a humanistic and person-centred core – a belief that everyone is able to make progress and improvement in their lives and no one is inherently evil. I incorporate other theories if they might be useful for you – we can collaborate on what might work for you and what might not.

People don’t fit neatly into boxes – theories can help but they’re only approximations of what’s really going on. However, research shows that people generally do better if they can understand a rationale for how they are feeling or behaving.

Experience
I have worked with a range of different client groups including male prisoners, many of whom were recovering from addictions. Helping people to face up to their difficult emotions, instead of avoiding them has been meaningful work to me.

I have a lot of experience in supporting people through loss - accompanying them through it or helping them to express feelings. Often these feelings can be taboo, or ‘not allowed’, but they are still there and letting them out helps people to move on.

While every person is different, many stories have common themes that are familiar from personal and professional experience. This can help you to explore your own feelings and perceptions.

Neurodiversity means that there is a wide range of how people perceive and respond to the world. I work with neurodivergent people with autism or ADHD to help them to explore the same common human issues, helping to understand how their condition might interact.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

I’m a relational therapist and believe that relationships are responsible for how we see ourselves and, often, for the difficulties we are in.

Sometimes we approach relationships in a way that hurts us and others.

The relationship between you and me will be important in making counselling work or not. If you don’t grow to trust me, we won’t get much done. I might not be the right therapist for you and that’s OK. I haven’t met anyone I’m unable to work with yet though.
