About me

Information on the therapeutic relationship

The therapeutic relationship is a place where two human beings can connect on a deeper level to what we may experience in some aspects of day-to-day life, and to really begin to unpick the challenges that the person may be experiencing. The chance to sit with another person, to talk, be free from judgments, in a safe and non-threatening environment can be truly life changing. It is an opportunity to feel seen, heard and understood, without the other person having an agenda for how they would like you to be. They will meet you where you are at, and be with you, as you are. I am now able to see clients face to face at Horizon Counselling Services in Plymouth. Please visit Horizon's website for more details, and following the booking page for Beth Hicks.

Information on my experience and skill set

Through my years of training, and vast amount of experience working as a counsellor, I believe I will be able to offer you a safe, empathic, and non-judgmental space. I have many years’ experiences of working as both a counselling tutor, teaching both level three and level four counselling diplomas, as well as working as a full-time counsellor.

Additional study on trauma

My specialist area of interest is trauma. Throughout my training I have spent an extensive amount of time studying trauma, and the effects childhood developmental trauma can have on a person. As well as my additional study, and interest in working with trauma. I have also a vast amount of experience of counselling children and young people.

What to expect in a first session

The first session will very much, give both you and I, the chance to get to know more about what it is you are hoping to get out of the sessions, and the ways in which therapy can help you. We may have had a 30 minute introductory session , if so, we will likely continue from where we left off, if not, I will give you some information about how my contract works (it is likely you would have read and signed the contract before our first session) such as booking in for sessions, cancellation policy, and information around safeguarding, and data protection etc. I will then ask if you have had counselling before, if so, I will find out about what that experience was like for you, and ways in which you may, or may not have found it helpful. I will then give you some more information about the way in which I work.  We will begin the session by seeing, if together, we can gentle hone in, a little further, on the presenting issue that brings you to therapy.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Further information

Through therapy, I can begin to help you gentle bring into awareness the challenges you feel you are facing, as well as beginning the stages of processing those challenges, getting to know and understand your emotional landscape, and look at how you can integrate this newfound awareness into your day to day lives.

I work in an integrative way, which means that I do not believe one size fits all. I work in the way that is best for the client I am working with at that time, depending on their needs and what they hope to get out of their therapy sessions. I integrate a range of therapy modalities which include Person Centred, Gestalt, Mindful based CBT and Attachment Theory.
