About me

Hello, I'm Adrian.

A Little About Me

I am a highly experienced, dedicated, and skilled Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist and Psychodynamic Counsellor.  I have accreditation and am registered with the UKCP.  I am also a member of the Council for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists and Jungian Analysts (CPJA). I have been counselling for 20 years and delivering psychotherapy for 15 of those.

I bring a wealth of life's experience to the therapy.  I am frequently told how I go the extra mile for clients. If you are determined to beat what holds you back - we will each be in good company

My learning was extremely wide. This ensures you are not squeezed into a narrow stream of treatment!  This is a thorough but affordable therapy of a quality that large service providers seldom if ever fund. Anxiety for example, shouldn't be a life sentence - knowing how it got there is key to it's departure.

With extensive experience in the NHS and other private and charitable health providers, I know how good it can be when such services get it right - I also know just how utterly time-wasting and deflating it can be when they don't.

My private clients are from every age group and walk of life.  All deserve my best....and get it!  You get honesty, thoughtfulness and a therapy that has proven itself over decades. You are not a label - you are a human.

Why Did I Become A Therapist?

From a young age I could feel a deep empathy for others.  In my early career I worked with many people facing some serious social and emotional difficulties.  Then and now, I experienced a useful empathic determination to support people out of their difficulty.

One day I was approached by a well-known psychological figure who shared an enthusiasm in my ability.  Spurred on by this, I then gained greater experience in many settings before heading for university.

I worked with Victim Support, adult crisis services, children's charities, schools, and the NHS in my training.  I studied and qualified at The University of Kent where I obtained a Master of Clinical Science (Psychotherapy). I went on to supervise and train counsellors and key workers in a Brixton (South London) crisis centre. I accepted roles which resulted in further years of exceptional clinical experience with some of the most hard-working of NHS teams.

However, I was dismayed to observe the NHS systems which were adopting unethical 'sticking-plaster' mental health approaches, which often prolonged the pain and caused people to give up.

In October 2008 the mass-labelling of NHS Primary Care patients began.. Every person seeking counselling via their 'IAPT' route was given a label of some kind. The 'label' helped to monetize IAPT.  Soon, 50% of clients were simply walking out. 'Label fever' was spreading!  Research in one London school concluded that every one of 800+ pupils had ADHD!

Today, it is now widely accepted that many people believe they have a permanent condition, even though it was never properly diagnosed - if at all

I strongly believe in giving clients the very highest degree of professional attention, I therefore commenced work in private practice. This is truly the best way to be able to deliver the most genuine, wide and  rewarding therapy.

You Are So Important:

My skills today are tailored to you, whatever your current 'relationship' with the world.  To me, every client should be correctly assessed and delivered the therapy with the very best chance of success.  'Labels' can stifle care. Let's work swiftly but do the whole thing properly.

No matter the ups and downs and struggles you have survived, your life and history are deeply important to me and highly relevant to a successful therapy.

As children, we grow with strengths and defences according to a multitude of conditions that we had to tolerate and adjust to.

Even as toddlers, many of us become 'survivors' of a damaged world,.  The exciting bit is that nature anticipated this may happen!  If you've made it this far, you can rise-up from it by using any negative experiences to establish a far more positive understanding for the future. You are stronger than you might know!

I regard all people as being of equal value, irrespective of gender, orientation, race, disability, religion, belief, age or appearance.  Everyone is welcome and will always get the very best care and attention.  Let's aim high.

How bad does it get?

You're story is unique.  Although many people have been through similar experiences, I never forget the number of ways life unfolds has unlimited variations - that's why I pay so much attention to your story - when you're ready to share it.

If your therapy doesn't get this part right - it's just not therapy!

Depression

These days, depression is often treated as if there is something wrong with you!  Not here. In fact, your depression is far more likely to be caused by a combination of no-win situations, fear, or a sense of loss you have endured.

Depression is mostly a natural reaction.  We get stuck there when whatever we have tried - fails.  If this is you, let's see if we can locate a way to cope with and change, what previously had felt 'unchangeable'.

You And I Solve Mysteries

I know all too well about the difficulties of relationships, including the complexities of family issues and the co-dependencies and fears of abandonment.  I know deeply about the legacy of abuse and neglect - I have worked in this field extensively. Great progress can be made to change outcomes and help restore faith in yourself.

I also know how a workplace can feel like the last place you want to attend due to organisational bullying and even, forms of abuse from those who step over the line one way or another.

Yes, we can work it out.

Having to resort to medications to compensate for a lack of quality talking-therapies is a national disgrace. You and I will work swiftly and carefully, making sure that this talking therapy is the very best.

Safe and Confidential:

Locating a safe, trusted therapist and the truly confidential space in which to carefully & skilfully share your life and times, can be a huge relief. It can be the start of a truly rewarding journey.

No personal identifying information is stored on computers or devices of any kind.

I offer you what you should always have had in your life – privacy, the attention, the time, the place and emotional space where your needs are at the very centre of everything we do.

This is not another tick-box 'make-over'.  I do my best to help us solve the mysteries which sit at the very core of your problems.

If you are hesitant to try therapy, I assure you that clients usually gain great confidence from the insights.  It is 'our' journey - we learn from each other and adopt a pace that's right for you.  You will never, ever, be pressured to talk.

How soon would you like to connect?

If you message me I will reply on the same day.  We can talk on the phone initially at no charge. If you then want to continue , I can arrange a first full session very quickly if needed. The more flexible you are, the sooner it can happen.  I will always respond rapidly to your reaching out to me.

I can provide sessions online via Skype or Zoom, on the phone, or face to face sessions in one of my consulting rooms.

Local clients come from Canterbury, Whitstable, Tankerton, Herne Bay, Bridge, Faversham, Fordwich, Ash, Ashford, Wye, Maidstone, Sandwich, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, the Medway Towns, Thanet and other Kent locations.  I do have limited sessions available in my Canterbury & Bridge rooms currently.

Online is also available for anyone based elsewhere.

If you live or work in Kent, we can meet at my practice in central Canterbury or in Bridge (Nr Canterbury). Face to face is the ideal way to experience therapy.  Equally, many online clients can do really well engaging from anywhere.

Please do feel welcome to get in touch.

I really look forward to hearing from you.
