About me

Hi, I’m Steve and thank you for taking the time read my profile. I’d firstly like to say “Well Done” if you are taking the first steps towards feeling better about yourself or addressing things that are concerning you. I have always been passionate about the wellbeing of others and I'm here to help.

I understand that problems can come from past events and can feel like they have been there a long time but I also appreciate that sometimes something completely unexpected can affect how you feel and think.

I know that finding the counsellor that’s right for you can be a difficult and daunting prospect so let me help by telling you a little bit about me and about how I work.

Firstly, I believe that the client and counsellor relationship, in some cases, is the therapy. What I mean by this, is that sometimes you may already have some of the answers you’re looking for and it’s possible that what you need is some help, time and support to find them? This is where I can help you.

I will provide that help and support for you with a warm and calm approach to counselling. I will never judge you and I will give you the space to speak freely and to think about how you feel. From there we can move forward together and explore your emotions in a supportive environment.

This will not only empower you to establish a more positive mindset and a happier life, but will also enable you to face future challenges more effectively. I view counselling relationships as a partnership, we become a team and we work together to achieve your goals.

I am trained in an integrative approach to counselling. This means I can use different therapeutic approaches and techniques such as Person Centred, CBT, Psychodynamic and Solution Focussed Brief Therapy. I will always tailor your sessions to your specific needs and the sessions will always be yours to speak about what you want.

Previous clients have found this works really well as I will treat you as a unique individual and I have never believed in a “One size fits all” approach to counselling.

I worked in one of London’s emergency services for 30 years and have a wealth of experience of the day-to-day struggles, hardships, anxieties and pressures we all face, and I know how difficult life can become sometimes.

I have seen, at first- hand, the effects of acute and post-traumatic stress, depression, eating disorders, bereavement, low self-esteem, and anxiety and having also worked within the NHS I have helped clients with a wide spectrum of other problems that they have faced. This work reinforced my view that by using the right approach, and by giving my clients space, time and support that recovery and forward progress are not only possible but likely.

I hold a level 4 Diploma in therapeutic counselling and am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I adhere to their ethical framework in order to ensure your safety and wellbeing at all times.

I am also a Mental Health First Aid Instructor and I hold a current enhanced DBS certificate and am fully insured to practice.

At the moment I have limited availability at my private practice in Horley and online via Zoom but I also provide a "Walk and Talk" service where we meet outside and have a 50 minute session while enjoying the benefits of being outdoors.

Please contact me for a free 30 minute consultation where we can discuss availability and we can see how we both feel about working together.

I offer a discounted rate to Emergency Service employees and serving and ex-military personnel.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
