About me

Hello, I'm Ruth - I have a counselling practise operating from Corsham Wellbeing Clinic on the high Street - Corsham Counselling. The town is 10 miles from Bath and 5 miles from Chippenham.

I am a fully qualified Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapeutic Counsellor and a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP).

I can work with you on a time-limited or open-ended basis depending on your therapeutic goals and other factors such as budget. Time-limited work tends to be more solution-focussed working in the present. 0pen-ended work allows us to explore further back in your history to better understand where your behaviour now is rooted. Recognising what in your past has shaped you, can facilitate a greater understanding of yourself and can help you to consciously change those old patterns that are unhelpful.

Together, we will consider different ways of being and relating that you feel are closer to your true self. How you want to be, not how you have become.

Whatever you’re feeling and however you choose to describe it – anxiety, stress or depression, having the opportunity to talk to someone, without judgement or the desire to rescue you, can be transformational. A strong therapeutic relationship characterised by honesty, acceptance and empowerment, will provide the perfect conditions for change to be realised. As your counsellor, I will be there for you, and we will work together to find the best way forward.

Training, qualifications & experience

I hold a BACP accredited Diploma in Integrative and Humanistic Counselling. My period of study started with a certificate in Listening Skills, followed by a one year Foundation in Psychotherapy and Counselling, followed by a further three years of study to become a fully qualified Psychotherapeutic Counsellor.

The Integrative nature of my training, encourages me to consider the whole person, your mental, physical and emotional needs and the impact of the world around you. I have studied multiple theorists, tools and modes of working, so that I can tailor an individual approach for you, rather than trying to fit you into my way of working. This approach is complimented by the Humanistic perspective that is the belief that all individuals have the resources to support themselves.

I will help you to think about your feelings and take responsibility for your thoughts and actions. The emphasis is on self-development and achieving your highest potential.

The experience I have enjoyed as a counsellor has strengthened my belief that people are truly incredible and the inbuilt resilience and hope we have, despite everything that’s thrown at us is amazing. It is there, if well hidden. It can just take some time to coax it out from the safety of our understandable resistance, defence and fear.

In addition to my formal training and private practise, over the past three years, I have been working as a volunteer counsellor with Developing Health and Independence (DHI), where I support clients across a diverse range of backgrounds. At DHI we specialise in helping people who have a history of addiction and the support we offer promotes health and equally importantly, independence. Although a dependency on alcohol or drugs is what has bought the clients to DHI specifically, the nature of the work I do encompasses a huge range of issues including childhood trauma, domestic abuse, severe anxiety and eating disorders.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
