About me

Welcome to my profile. I'm Lucy, a registered Art Psychotherapist, working with children and young people. I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and am a member of The British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT). I participate in regular clinical supervision to ensure a high standard of practice.

What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a way to express thoughts and feelings through the creation of artwork. You can talk as little or as much as you like. The work could include drawing, painting, 3D artwork, textile work, Lego and creative small-world imaginative play. You would work with me to explore your personal issues within the safe and confidential environment of the art therapy room. It can help you to understand your difficulties and provides an opportunity for you to grow.

Who is it Suitable For?

Art therapy is suitable for everyone: you do not need to be ‘good’ at art. It can help with a wide range of issues including anxiety, mental health problems, family difficulties, behavioural issues, emotional problems, grief, and difficulties related to social skills. It can help children and young who may be struggling to be in school.

Within art therapy we would work with both conscious and unconscious issues and feelings. ‘Conscious’ means having an awareness of the issues and feelings, and the ‘unconscious’ is part of our mind where we ‘hold’ the issues, feelings and memories that may have been ‘forgotten’ or ‘put out’ of our minds, or things of which we are not aware. These things in our unconscious do not go away, and will often re-emerge through artwork.  The art therapy sessions provide a safe space to explore these difficult feelings.

Sessions are usually individual, on a weekly basis and are 50 minutes in length. I will carry out an initial assessment and, with you and your parents or carers, will consider what the purpose of the therapy would be for you. What do you hope to achieve through working together? You will choose your materials each week, and you will explore your issues and emotions within the art. I will usually talk to you about issues and emotions that emerge through the artwork.

Art Therapy can:

  • help you come to terms with past traumatic experiences
  • help you to express your feelings and emotions in a safe way
  • provide non-judgmental support
  • help build your self-esteem and confidence
  • help you express things that are hard to say in words
  • help you explore your identity
  • give you time to think about what you want now and in the future
  • be playful, fun, relaxing and enjoyable
