About me

How can counselling help?

There is no truer adage “that a problem shared is a problem halved.” I would add, that speaking to an impartial, non-judgemental person who truly listens, not just to the content of what you are saying but also to the emotional tone and notices your embodied presence, can be an incredibly powerful experience. It helps to foster greater awareness and understanding of how you are in the world and relationships. This deepening sense of awareness allows for greater choice with your behaviour and a move to more healthy behaviours and relationships.

I understand that approaching me for therapy might be a daunting prospect, or it might be the first step in an exhilarating process, wherever you are in this, I hope to make it as smooth as possible.

My approach

I work in an integrative-relational style, which means I see therapy as a collaborative endeavour and believe that healing takes place in relationship to each other. I also work in a trauma-informed way, with an awareness of the impact of trauma on the body and mind.

I approach therapy from an attitude of openness and curiosity about your experience, prizing you as the expert of your own experience and me as a guide in helping you understand this experience and unlock your potential.

Influences

As an Integrative Counsellor, I am inspired by a multitude of psychotherapeutic modalities, each helping to complement and support my work. I also take inspiration from influences as broad as science, philosophy, religion, spirituality, eastern thought and Buddhism, shamanism and magic. I take a holistic view of healing that incorporates knowledge throughout the ages and includes the body.

Specialism

I have extensive experience in helping people experiencing anxiety or panic attacks, I help clients to combat negative and intrusive thoughts, regulate overwhelming physical sensations and ultimately understand the deeper origins of their anxiety.

I am also passionate about helping clients with low moods, relationship difficulties and identity crises.

Finally, I also have experience in helping clients with psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar and paranoia.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am an Integrative Counsellor and Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. As a member of the BACP, I abide by their code of ethics, to practice safely and ethically. I also hold a Bsc in Psychology.

Throughout my training and now alongside my private practice, I work for an organisation offering long-term individual therapy to clients with psychosis on a low-cost basis.

In my previous career, I worked as a support worker for ten years in various homeless organisations in London. I worked with different client groups including ex-offenders, severe and enduring mental health, and alcohol and substance use. From this role, I have an intimate knowledge of the criminal justice, social services, and mental health systems, coupled with experience in safeguarding adults.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

What you can expect from the first session?

In the first session I will try to get a sense of your current dilemma and some information about your past history. This is also an opportunity for you to ask me any questions about the therapy process and what you can expect. I am also happy to answer these questions at any point in the therapy.
