About me

I'm a Counselling Psychologist with 24 years of clinical experience in psychology and a background in nursing, specialising in working with clients who have experienced a form of trauma. Trauma is not the same for everyone. It can often be related to shock or changes in feelings of anxiety, anger or depression.

If you are experiencing

  • Feelings of being overwhelmed or in distress
  • Feeling anxious or depressed
  • Finding it difficult to manage daily life stresses or burnout
  • Finding it hard to cope with your mood
  • Experiencing pain from childhood trauma or bullying
  • If you are struggling or in pain then the type of therapy I offer may help you.

I offer trauma psychotherapy to both local and international clients. The type of trauma therapy I provide may be quite different if you have experienced talking therapy before, so please get in touch to ask any questions about how I can help you. There is more detailed information within my website.

I offer a trusted private practice online and by arrangement in person in Morningside, Edinburgh. Previously I was working from Trauma Psychotherapy Scotland, Glasgow.

Getting Started

The first step is often the hardest step to make. I offer a free initial 20 minute zoom introductory meeting if you would like to find out more information and to give you a chance to meet me in person or you can organise an initial appointment.

An intake assessment session explores the reasons for attending therapy and to ask any questions you may have. Many people contact due to feeling sad, depressed or anxious but there no hard and fast rules. After the first session we can work out if you would like to arrange counselling and regular date agreed.

Training, qualifications & experience

I trained as a counselling psychologist in Trinity College Dublin completed in 2001. Prior to training in formal psychology, I was qualified as a Nightingale Nurse for many years working in the London and Dublin.  For more detailed information please see my bio updated monthly on: https://www.hendrickps.com/about-me.html

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

HCPC
Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.

Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Testimonials

I would just like to say a big thank you. Especially after yesterday's session. Yesterday felt like I have gone to the next stage? I felt so much more energetic in the afternoon. With your help I feel so much better from when we first met.
I feel more in control of myself and have confidence to learn more about myself. I would highly recommend the treatment.

Kind regards (B.W. with kind permission)

I am doing well. I am noticing that I seem to be allowing myself to experience and express my emotions rather than suppressing them (particularly with alcohol). I am far more curious of my reactions and feel that I am able to then process them and accept them more - if that makes sense. I also seem to have more space/motivation when thinking of the future and rarely have those feelings of being stalked by something in the past.

Thank you for working with me over these past few months and for being so good at your job.

"Katie has always been there for me I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder at the end of 2019 and have been working with Katie for over 3 years. During this time, she tried various approaches, including breathing techniques, CRM, and some Dialectical Behavioral Therapy techniques, to help me and we finally moved onto DBR. Katie, as a psychologist, is professional, efficient, responsible, flexible, and punctual, on top of everything, she cares about me. She has done a brilliant job of caring about me but holding strong boundaries at the same time. Because of the perfect balance, she has been keeping, I feel I can always count on her, in fact, she has been there for me almost every week in the last few years. The DBR technique mostly skips talking (words) and allows the patient to face his/her pain or issues directly, which was just what I needed, as after years of other therapies before this, I found out that talking was not sufficient for my recovery. The effect of DBR during each session was sensational, it gives me the opportunity of being with the real me or to say with my real feelings or emotions. I was sitting there with myself, my pain, my feelings, and Katie (not alone). To be honest, working with me is very challenging because of the complexity of the trauma I have been through. It definitely requires a lot of patience, resourcefulness, and determination. I am grateful that Katie went through countless cycles with me, and sometimes it even seemed like things were completely stuck, but she is still here to date. I am much much better and my mental health is still improving. I have mostly stopped looking outwards, blaming other people or their faults, or trying to change others, instead, I am mostly looking for anything about myself that I can work on."

Best wishes,
