About me
I am a qualified psychotherapist based in Hampton village in the London Borough of Richmond, offering individual counselling, psychotherapy and art psychotherapy to adult clients. I provide a safe, non-judgemental and empathic space where we will work together to make sense of the difficulties and challenges you are experiencing, and I am able to work both online and face-to-face, depending on your preference.
You:
- May have been feeling overwhelmed and need some help untangling your feelings or seeing a different perspective
- May have a particular conflict or difficulty to resolve
- May be struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, addiction or be a survivor of serious childhood trauma
- Or may simply want the space to explore who you are and what you want from your life and relationships
Whether it is short-term support with a specific issue or something more long-term and open-ended, I work in a strongly relational way, adapting my approach to suit the specific needs of the individual. I believe everyone has the potential for growth and personal transformation, whatever has happened in a person’s life, and I aim to facilitate change by helping to bring limiting self-beliefs into awareness in order to challenge them, consider how these beliefs might be affecting present experience and illuminate possibilities for choice.
Training, qualifications & experience
I have a Masters in Integrative Arts Psychotherapy, which means that as well as being trained in a range of traditional humanistic and psychodynamic ‘talking therapies’, I am also qualified to use the arts and metaphor within my practice, which offer a way to process difficult emotions where words are hard to find or are getting in the way. You do not need any previous experience or artistic ability, as it is not about aesthetics. Alongside other therapeutic techniques and approaches, working with imagery in a session - should we choose to - can provide a deeper insight.
I have experience in both the private sector and the NHS, including the Priory Hospital Roehampton, a substance misuse service within a large London trust and an evening service for survivors of childhood sexual abuse, where I used a trauma-informed approach. I am registered with the HCPC - the governing body that regulates healthcare professionals - and I am a member of the British Association of Art Therapists.
You can read more about my practice - including how I might use creative techniques - on my website: varnacounsellingandpsychotherapy.com

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.
They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.
Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.
