About me

My name is Kangli. I am a qualified, registered & professional Humanistic Gestalt Counsellor/Psychotherapist and Bilingual Therapist (English & Mandarin), also trained in CBT and Person Centred therapy. I work with clients from age above 11, including young people, adults and older adults.

My therapy room is based in a quiet location in the Highfield area in Southampton which is easily accessible via public transport. I offer in-person, online and telephone counselling.

The way I work is warm, authentic, non-judgemental and creative, adapting to individual needs. During our sessions, I offer a safe space where we can talk through your feelings, thoughts or experiences about how life affects you, and look at new perspectives or ways of relating. Sometimes, if you are willing, I can work with you in creative ways using a variety of media and methods. This can help clients to get in touch with their unconscious mind, which often is influential in people's decision making.  My counselling room is a dedicated space for you to be you, or to search and discover your true self.

My main counselling approach is Gestalt. This means that I work with clients in a holistic way, helping clients develop self-awareness and encouraging the integration of their physical, sensory, emotional and intellectual experience so that clients can find new viewpoints to problems to bring about positive changes in life. I help clients to identify and become aware of their unhelpful patterns and habits, whilst recognising how and where they may be stuck in their day to day life.

In addition to Gestalt, I also hold a pluralistic perspective in my approach. This means that I accept and value other therapeutic approaches that might benefit clients’ various needs. For example, I have training in Person Centred Counselling, which helps me to listen to and respect clients’ own preferences and choices, rather than decide what’s ‘best’ for them. I also have training in CBT - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy so I am able to integrate some solution focused CBT techniques in my sessions when appropriate, to help clients identify and challenge their negative thoughts and behaviours, and develop coping skills to manage problems.

I am bilingual and I can work in both English and Mandarin. Having lived in different countries and cultures, I have a deep understanding of the impact of being different and how it might affects people’s interaction with one another. I am familiar with different cultures and curious in learning more. Transitioning from one culture to another, transforming and integrating, managing feelings of lost, feelings of otherness, adapting and accepting changes, searching for a sense of belonging and new identity… these are examples of issues that can be explored and worked through within our sessions, especially for clients from ethnic minority background and multicultural clients.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
