About me

I have been an integrative psychotherapist since 2006 and have specialised training in couples counselling, anxiety, addiction, adolescence and children’s counselling.

I also seek to offer more affordable counselling . This is when people who have completed one to one work have the possibility of joining a small weekly group.  Group sessions include my interventions as the therapist and the added, and often, rich wisdom and reflections of the group.

How long does counselling take?

I offer short term work (1 to 12 sessions) and longer term work of a year or more. The amount of time depends upon the needs and wants of individuals, couples and groups.  Each session is 1 hour long with an option to do 90 minutes if requested.

What happens in a counselling session?

The foundational base of my work is person centred counselling. This means that the sessions are client led. It is your session and you choose what you want to bring.

However, as an integrative counsellor I use a blend of other approaches and practices.  For example,  I may bring in the psychodynamic approach. This approach helps you to understand how your current feelings and behaviour are shaped by your past experiences and your unconscious mind.

I often use Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Transactional Analysis (TA). CBT will help you to manage your problems by encouraging you to change the way you think and behave. TA helps clarify social interaction better and from that to learn how to communicate effectively.

Training, qualifications & experience

My specialism in  couples counselling, anxiety, addiction, adolescence and children’s counselling has led me to working with a huge variety of mental health challenges.

  • People are complex

People are not defined by their presenting struggles. For example, abuse,  bereavement, abandonment and trauma are all possible reasons why relationships struggle.  Equally, they may also be the reasons behind a child or teenager self-harming, having panic attacks, feeling depressed, drinking alcohol, taking illicit drugs etc.

  • People are not islands

Working with couples, families and groups as well as one to one has given me the opportunity to counsel in the context of school environments, outdoor therapeutic spaces and children and adult's charities.

Where appropriate, I seek to work with schools and support systems to ensure that there is a holistic and comprehensive approach to the work.

  • People are diverse

I have experience working across different cultures and with clients who speak English as a second language.

I have also counselled international volunteers (aged 18 to 27) at Ashburnham Place, a  Retreat Centre in East Sussex.

Boarding school trauma, spiritual abuse, physical abuse, fostering, adoption and the trauma and anxiety of refugee status are all areas where I have extensive experience.

  • 12 Steps

I worked for 9 years in community alcohol/drug programmes and at a residential rehab. This included working with the first 3 steps of the Minnesota AA 12 steps programme. I have witnessed the benefits of people doing these steps.

  • Professional Membership

I have accredited membership with two professional bodies: BACP and ACC.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

ACC
Association for Christian Counsellors (ACC)

The Association of Christian Counsellors and Linked Professions is a professional body representing and setting standards for Christian counselling and care in the UK. The organisation is made up of various different membership categories, including Counsellor and Accredited, and requires all members working as counsellors to undertake Continuous Professional Development on a regular basis.

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
